What a great list! I guess I'll join in and add my trivia about Pompeii. Research found that most of the victims died during the fourth surge, where the ash was only 3 cm thick. They didn't die of suffocation from ash/impact of pyroclastic flow - they were actually cooked alive from the inside out in an instant. Important and scary distinction - instead of burning from outside in, they burned from inside out. Not sure which is worse! Then the 5th and 6th surges buried the place in ash. The first 3 surges stopped short of Pompeii.
