Bill Blass

Jerod. Harrison can make a big play on occasion because of his speed, but this isn't a defense who can weather a lot of three and outs. Especially in the heat (early season Tampa). They need to be kept off the field. Jerome's typical run is no gain to two yards. He's a down on first contact runner. It is what it is. His yard per gain is better because, statistically, one 20 yard run can make up for four no gainers. But it can't really make up for four second and ten situations. Harrison's statistics are skewed based on the KC game last year. Go back and see what he did last year against Baltimore and even the second game against the steelers where Cribbs and Harrison tore it up. 16 carries, 33 yards and Jerome is doubtful. I love Jerome as a change-up guy, honestly, I'd rather see Cribbs get the touches. I'm excited to see what Davis can offer this week.

The Browns simply need to put more trust into him. No more Mangina!!

Matt Graham

You put it perfect daniel. Jerome Harrison had 88 touches for 301 yards before the KC game last year. Then we he went against those "stellar" defenses at the end of a long NFL season and he was force-fed 30+ times, he was able to gain 200+. Harrison is a threat to go down after every arm tackle thrown his way. You leave an arm out against Hillis and you may lose it. Everyone wants to gripe about Hillis's fumble last week but lets put this in perspective. Hillis only lost one fumble last week. But do your homework. In his career prior, Hillis had 1 fumble... and that one in Denver was partly because Jay Cutler didn't follow through with the handoff. I get that NFL fans are not craving a white running back who loves playing the game and gives maximum effort every play.

daniel tyler

Yeah I guess you guys crying for Harrison feel really smart now, he got more touches, 16 touches, the result? 33 yards? An amazing 2.1 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Hillis is still averaging 4+ ypc no matter how many carries he gets. He may not break off 40+ yarders, but if you give Hillis enough carries he will break off quite a few in the 20 yard range, which would raise his 4 ypc up to 5 or 6. Hillis had 2 more yards yet Harrison had double the carries. Oh yeah and Harrison ooughed the ball up to go along with his 2.1 yards per carry! yet you are ready to throw Hillis under the bus for a fluke play, go look at the tape, his own teammate was the one who knocked the ball out against the Buccaneers. Harrison cried cried cried about how he needed more carries, he got them today and didn't do jack with it. Ill take the guy who is consistent over the guy who kills drives over and over and has one big run to make his ypc go up, because obviously not every week he will have that big run to make his ypc go up.

Hillis is not slow btw, hes 250 pounds and ran a 4.58, the same time as Beanie Wells, would you call Wells slow? Hes faster than Moreno who ran a 4.62. Hillis never fumbled in Denver when he had 5 starts, the one fumble he had the following year came on a return I believe, why a 250 pound man was returning kicks, I don't know. He got better every start and put up a great game against a number 1 ranked rush defense in the Jets who hadn't allowed a 100 yard rusher all year.

Oh well, I guess if he was 6"3, 255 lbs. with a 40 time of 9.9 seconds and a yards per carry average of -2.1 he would get the ball more often lol!

I went home and set up this website but it took a couple days to get the dns right. www.firemangina.com.
Midas Touch

Here are Harrison's college stats: Although he played most of his junior year behind starter Chris Bruhn, he finished the last five games of the year with over 900 yards. His senior year saw greater playing time and great success. He broke the record for most consecutive games with 100 or more yards by a Pac-10 runner, with 16, and set the Cougar single-season rushing record with 1900 yards, which also led the NCAA Division I. I am calling for the firing of Mangenious "Yeah right" more like manidiot and for the Browns organisation to utilize the talent of Harrison and give him the opportunity to win games.

Midas Touch

Eric Mangini should lose his job. This is a horrible coach. How can you have a back that shatters the Browns rushing record previously held by Jim Brown and is currently 3rd on the all time rushing list for a single game ahead of Adrian Peterson and not give him the opportunity to produce. The Browns are sitting on a gold mine in Harrison and refuse to use him? It is no wonder this franchise loses to Tampa Bay in game 1. When you have a back of this caliber you need to give him the opportunity to produce. Give him around 20 touches per week and use Hillis to keep Harrison fresh.

Alex

I completely agree. I do not understand Man-crappi's decision to pull Harrison after his 39 yard run to simply allow Hillis to score the TD. All that does is give confidence to a player who chokes! ...ahem.... T. Hightower....Anyway...I do hope the Browns realize they are sitting on a gold mine with Harrison and let him have the chance to produce his 1,000 yard russhing season!

Mike

Nice article! And you made a really good call on Forte earlier; being in a PPR league I foresee using him a lot in the coming weeks. These were my WRs and RBs for Week 1 - MegaTron/SSmith (NYG); Peterson/SJax. Enough said!! Not a single td between the four of them. Only positive is that it can only go up from here. For now, it has come down to Rivers and Keller to provide my scoreboard some semblance of presentability. I know it is a bit early to panic, but what are your thoughts on Mark Clayton and Jermaine Gresham (Heath Miller/ K Winslow are also available on waivers)? It seems that Bradford and Clayton have something nice going between them, plus having Clayton and S Jax together makes sense to me. I currently have Harvin, Forte, McCluster, Harrison on my bench. Would you recommend any changes yet? If so, who should I drop?

JerodMSF

Bill, there is no question that Harrison needs to be put into a position to succeed. He is not Jamal Lewis no matter how much his coaches seem to want him to play that way. He can make people miss, however, and he has both speed and quickness to be able to take advantage of the holes around the tackles that he'll get with this offensive line. Harrison is going to have some short and no gain plays, it is what it is. Barry Sanders was like that. But you can deal with it because of the constant threat of the 20- or 30-yard gain, which Harrison has proven over and over again are not flukey runs. He and Hillis can be a very good 1-2 punch, but history has shown that the Browns are a better team and Harrison is a better runner when he totes it 17-20 times a game. I don't understand why this is difficult for supposedly smart coaches to understand.

J Jackson

Great article. The guy who says it's stupid has very little knowledge of football obviously. Hillis looked good on one run, which resulted in a touchdown. Other than that for the amount of carries he had he was not productive. His numbers clearly show. When factored in with Him coughing up the ball Hillis clearly is not the back that should repeatedly be targeted. While I like Hillis, Jerome Harrison showed flashes of what he will do when trusted upon. Every running back in the NFL will have 0 and 1 yard runs. However at the end of the day numbers speak loud and clear. Harrison averaged over 5 yards a carry, his lone reception being 7 yards. Mangini only putting the ball in Harrison's hands 9 times, then allowing Delhomme to self destruct is a failure in coaching that I feel will be here to stay with this staff.

Bill Blass

Stupid article. The 10 touches highlighted the best and worst of Harrison. Without the gaping holes we saw in KC last year (Harrison averaged under 4 yards a carry in the others), we saw a lot of 1 yard and no yard gains and one big play. Contrast Hillis, who made positive yardage with every carry. You simply cannot keep your defense off the field with one and two yard gainers on first and second down. I'll agree that in the 15 touches they give Harrison a game, they need to get him the ball in space and on the edge. Between the tackles, if it's not blocked up perfectly, Harrison is down on first contact way too easily.
