I wanted to share a couple of changes that recently took place in Nova Scotia Canada (unfortunately not in my home province of Ontario) Two things.....Now in the emergency of Halifax hospitals they have EMS personnel who treat some of the patients. Through the triage process non-serious medical problems are sent to the EMS who are right there in the hospital. It has allowed shorter waiting periods and also has helped with our family doctor shortage which is meaning more people are going to emergency for minor medical problems. The second way they are utilizing their EMS more appropriately is in the field. I am not sure of the exact procedure that is used to make the decision, but the EMS can go to the call, and triage the patient and determine if they need to be transported immediately to hospital, or if the family can wait till morning (if that is the case) and transport them to the family physician. This happened with my mother one night and it was great. She was able to know that she was ok , but needed to get in touch with her doctor the next day and see them. My sister was able to stay with her for the night and then in a more relaxed less stressful state take her to the doctor in the morning. At 87 that can mean a lot ..... Any way just wanted to let you know that , yes we can find better ways to treat people, and if we didn't we would still be in the dark ages bloodletting!!!!!
