Our (military) job in N.I. was to target all terror groups. Religion never came into it... If you carried an illegal weapon on the streets of N.I. at that time, you were a ligitamate target. "We" were not interested which religion you were or which god you prayed to. The Republicans were the group that targeted the British, on British soil. The IRA were insurgents on British soil attacking British subjects.

I see lots of justifications in this about how the UK army where only there to shoot the IRA and little else. Oh wait it's the BBC so that explains it. When they went over there the UK army were cheered by Catholics (who lived under a reign of sectarian terror controlled by the Protestant Government of the statelet and it's notorious paramilitary police force) but they immediately activated their orders - to ignore Protestant terrorists, to target and harass Catholic communities (in their strategy this would make those communities hostile to the IRA or so they thought). They they started shooting innocent people dead on the streets of the Province, Bloody Sunday was only one example of that - there were many - and NOT some special unit now disbanded either. And the Catholics abandoned the foolish hope that the London regime which created the Orange statelet in NI would somehow behave better than it's horrible child - IRA recruitment then rocketed.

That the British killed civilians in Northern Ireland because they were Catholic is hardly a secret. I would treat any BBC material on the subject with a major dollop of scepticism as *it serves the Crown interests in one way or another*.

It gets worse. British soldiers, particularly officers who committed crimes such as rapes (I remember one where a guards officer cruelly cut up the girl he was raping by using a large ring internally) were given a choice. Prison or Ireland. That begs the question, what was their selection criteria for the MRF? I don't believe they suddenly saw the light and decided not to use assassination either.

The truth begins to emerge.....and they want to close the investigations. Sounds about right. On the Irish question, the British have been unaccountably shameless for hundreds of years. It makes no sense, but there it is. The British have always been a bastion of justice and fairness in the world except when it comes to the Irish. But. like Shakespeare said: Murder, tho it hath no tongue, will speak with most miraculous organ. This issue will not go away nor will it be forgotten by the Irish.
