I find Hedges really painful. He says a lot of obvious things. Yes the USA is collapsing, corruption etc. And it is good to talk about it. But his problem is that he's too self referential, too many "I's". Too much of what "I" did and "i" said. It's not really interesting. Discussing something outside of oneself is better. And it's sickening to hear all this stuff about religion and "ministering" to people. He's essientially a missionary. He will decide what's best for others whether they like it or not. His jumbled explanation of his "experience" in Roxbury is just awful. And I don't care and I'm not impressed with the fact that he's been a boxer for $25 dollars a fight and on and on. I hear a person who is arrogant, self promoting, and unbearably pious all the while. A pious ass.

Well, i listened to the first third of this ..... was as much as i could stand. Like Ray McGovern who says a lot of the right things but stops short of saying the real important stuff (for example, he criticizes Tenet as a bad director but not the VERY NATURE of the CIA itself) Hedges actually defends (though he tries to give the impression that it is reluctantly) the NY Times and disingenuously thinks they were MISTAKEN in their propagandizing for the Iraq war. I just don't really buy that either one of these guys ACTUALLY parted ways witht their former employers but only give that impression because it is useful for them in their new guises as critics of empire.

I have the greatest respect for Hedges as a journalist and highly intelligent person. BUT, to accept the official story of 9/11 goes to his integrity. No doubt, he falls short in this area. Which places him in the same category as Goodman, Palast, Pilger, Chomsky et al. Very sad....especially given my agreement in all other areas he discusses. Such is the price of being published. And also the price of ones soul.

This is an absolutely marvelous program---you may not agree with every detail, but the accumulation of valuable insights outweighs any details of disagreemtn---and the Book Program is to be lauded for bring Chris Hedges to its studios where Americans can SEE and HEAR a great thinker and moralist. What an inspiration. Thank you to C-Span and Book TV and also the very competent presenter (name unknown). This is one of the most valuable shows that I have seen. How can we get everyone to view this program? I waatched the whole thing with a sense of being in the presence of a huge moral and intellectual force field. Thank you to Chris Hedges and to C-Span. Henceforth I shall make a point of reading everything of H edges' that comes my way. Support Truthdig!

People haven't noticed the spiraling decline because many Americans (especially baby boomers) have very good lives, good jobs, good health, smart successful kids, and well-financed retirement. They see how brilliant their grandchildren are and believe that they - with the help of rapidly advancing technology, will be able to solve the world's challenges, in spite of failed political systems and failed economic systems. The primary worry is when nuclear weapons fall into the hands of those who lust form domination, exploitation, and destruction - i.e. Republicans.

There are two levels of economics present in the U.S. One is the high level corporate instigated economics, that is managed by and benefits the rich elites. If we would utilize the other low level economics that is supported by localized, agrarian lifestyle. Most Americans can maintain a level of life that would be healthy and sustainable. This kind of economic level (agrarian) would be very harmful to the Corporate World.

Hedges is right on especially regarding his critique of the Liberal class. The Liberals were set up as the political center under the wave of radicalism that existed in the 1930's and 1960's. The Liberal class that was instrumental in the attack on the Left and the rise of McCarthyism during the 1950's. RFK was a member of HUAC and targeting of the Teamsters Union. Hollywood was also instrumental in its attacks on labor after the war as well. Liberals are phonies and are not the friends of working people. They were set up as the center but after the Left was neutralized politics was able to shift further to toward despotism. However Hedges misreads the 1970's. The turning point in the 1970's was the Arab Oil Boycott caused by U.S. support for Israel. Israel was losing that war and threatened to use its nukes if the U.S. failed intervene on her behalf. U.S. intervention on Israel behalf is what led to the boycott whereby hyperinflation ensued causing tremendous economic disruption and dislocation. The constant blaming "corporations" only conceals and divert attention away from Zionist influence, dominance, and control over the American political economy.
