This is a civil matter. There are constitutional protections for copyright and patent holders as well as established court remedies. The only possible reason for this legislation is to institute a new layer of regulatory control which is the last thing we need. Look at what it's done to the auto and energy industries, to name only two.

Simply put, I see this "law" as opening a door to censorship both subtle and obvious. I believe that many of the "Powers That Be" are deeply concerned about the free and open content found on the internet. They find that they cannot gain any traction to "spin" a story, they presently cannot prevent things that make them uncomfortable from finding their way into the public consciousness. Things that they prefer to remain hidden often finds its way into the spotlight. The internet today is performing the function known as "the press" as "the press" itself has been co-opted, perverted and become unconscionably biased by "Outside Influences With Agendas" (ie. "Powers That Be") Much of what is being done is better done in the shadows with a fabricated cover of deniability or feigned ignorance. You only have to spend a few minutes looking around to see examples of this. (Fast & Furious, why republicans were against the tax extension & etc). The 1st Amendment was established specifically to combat this. For exactly this reason. While a lot of crummy things are done and protected by this Amendment, it remains as necessary and important today as it was the day it was first conceived and consequently penned into our Constitution. "We The People" must not allow this Amendment to be weakened in any manner it is too important. Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791 "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; OR ABRIDGING THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH, OR OF THE PRESS; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." I believe SOPA is the second scariest bill. The recently passed bill for funding and support of the US Military contains language that allows the President at his own determination, to have US citizens arrested if he deems them terrorists and have them throw in a prison with no rights to any due-process. THAT one scares the heck out of me.

If they were Libertarians, I would not be so worried. They are control freaks. The Founding Fathers thought our freedoms and what they designed were not adequate to an amoral or Godless population, and so it seems to be working out that way. If I am told not to infringe on a copyright, I do not. I never throw litter out the car window, while I drive. The self-control is both habitual and reasonable. 'Treat others as you would wish to be treated' is a lesson lost on millions, and they scoff at the idea.
