McGraw-Hill. That name rang a bell. That's the same company who published many of my school books in middle school and high school. So they're in the business of destroying entire national economies through credit ratings and they also publish the (history) school books read by impressionable kids (no doubt they leave their other business ventures out of those texts as I was taught that monopolies vanished years ago)? Whatever that saying is about who controls the present controls the past, perfect example right here.

Clearly, this is an apt analogy, as is the one of boa constrictor tightening its body around the victim. Unfortunately it is all true to life in the present capitalist mode of production, however there is a way out, and that shown by Marx and Engels: "proletarians unite, you have nothing to lose but your chains". This is as true today, as it was 150 years ago, maybe even more. The key word in the Communist Manifesto is UNITE, but to be able to do just that we need class consciousness, which seems generally to be lacking somewhat, with some exceptions like Greece and Egypt, for instance. On the contrary, the ruling class, finance, media and most governments speak with a single voice and act in one direction towards an abyss of war and general penury, ecological apocalypse, and fascism: take your pick! The irony is that this doesn`t have to be like this, it is in our power to change the world, and change it permanently. There is no need to `come away with despair and rage`, as Guest would have it, we should organise and act in our own interest, just as the tiny minority of the wealthy do, and the world could be ours!

This was a long, but well writen article. Italy, Spain, and the United States are next and it will not be an event to witness. Germany is within its 3% rule for its budget. Will have a balance budget for 2014 and continues to have a trade surplus every month. They are accumulating gold, which I hope will be for the purpose of backing a new currency, the German mark. Hopefully, Austria will join Germany in their common currency.

The administration of a global Jubilee (debt forgiveness), followed by the implementation of a just monetary system, free of all private, for-profit "central banks" is the only way forward. Let's hope more people come to this conclusion while we still have a basic infrastructure to work with.

When all this came to a head in 2008, the US government should have marched on Wall Street lock all exits, arrest all executives and nationalize the banks and AIG. Then these institutions should have been audited, and after that, charges should have bee laid to prosecute the perpetrators of the biggest robbery in the history of finance. When found guilty these thieves and robbers should have been stripped of their ill gotten wealth and imprisoned. A new management, totally removed from the old, should have been installed . Then after the Augurian stables have been cleansed from all that monumental graft and theft, the banks could perhaps be re- privatized. Instead of pouring trillions of dollars into thts vast ocean of graft, the money should have been used to rebuild the woefully neglected infrastructure. Also steps should have been taken to re industrialize, It takes 5 years to train an engineer . His education should have been paid for by the state. Now , I am afraid it is too late. P. S. The profession of 'Economist' might as well be abolished. They are all a bunch of frauds.All of them had it wrong, no exception. Those who had it right, weren't economists. The two basic laws of economy are: 1.Don't spend money you don't have'. .. 2. There ain't no free lunch. My grandmother taught me that when I was in grade one.

Trade and barter. Mutual support. Withdrawal of ALL so-called money from the banking system. Refusal to accept their money when tendered. Austerity cannot and will not pay the fraudulent debt. That's not the point. The choice is very simple ... wipe out the debt or wipe out the population. Personally, I'm all for wiping out the debt.

I agree with much of what you said, eddie. I didn't come away with despair and rage, but with the feeling that few politicians can understand and process the information in this article. No matter how much someone studies economics and gains experience working at banks and in government, there are too many moving parts for any one person to have a handle on international economics. The two textbooks I have on International economics describe conditions as they were in the 1970s when the books were written. Very little is the same today. One thing we know for sure is that the US and Israel spend enormous amounts of money terrorizing the rest of the world, and in a few cases, actually trying to stop violence committed by others. It's a terrible waste of money, human energy, and natural resources. Killing millions of people, both violent and innocent bystanders will never change the fact that new violent people are born every minute. We must find ways of managing people and resources that doesn't include such horriffic human suffering and destruction. Then we can focus the study of international economics on how the wealthy can help the poor, rather than exploiting them..

I have to agree with Mr. Stinson that this well written and thoughtfully laid-out piece generates a felling of hopelessness and outrage. If Greece, indeed, represents a microcosm and the maiden voyage which all of the debt riddle nations of the world must embark upon, it can only make ones blood boil to see that austerity in the form of gutted social spending, removal of any sought of social safety net for society's most vulnerable, no employment prospects, drastically higher taxes on the few that manages to remain employed and spiraling and never-ending public debt. The only forecast area of growth is for law enforcement goons whose job it will be to crush any type of protest, descent or uprising against the will of the World Bank, IMF or the oligarchs that they serve. The road ahead for the western nations that bailed out banks at the expense on the common good is fraught with danger. The challenge to traverse that road daunting. The question is, will so much collective humanity be so severely oppressed by so few?

I have never spent so much time reading a report and coming away with feelings of such despair and rage. I don't pretend to understand all of what I read however I do know several things. Every population on this plant should march on it's governments and demand the immediate elimination of all offensive military expenditures and massive reduction of all components of it's military. And then contact all of the holders of their debt. And give them an option. Lower interest rates and add 100 years to the time needed to pay off their loans or face immediate default.
