Same problem on this end. Precisely identical behavior. Nothing installed in Cydia, simply ran the hack from jailbreakme.com and boom, it exhibited the same behavior in the phone app and then would not resolve dns it appears as well as other odd behavior.

I have an identical problem here. JB ran fine, booted first time, white Cydia icon, attempts to start and then stops/crashes out. Power off and tether start with Redsn0w, still white Cydia icon, however this time upon start it goes a little longer, but still exits/crashes out as soon as the app expands to full screen and before anything else is drawn onto the screen (i.e., no graphics nor Cydia info).

So, it appears that we've got issues. It is a 3GS later model, was running 4.2.1 jailbroken. Ran update straight from iTunes (was amazed that it just ran through this time w/o an entire DFU restore) and then Redsn0w 0.9.6rc14. So here we are, could use some help, but I'm probably going to go ahead and try a DFU full reset right now as I don't have time to really wait much.

Shani, indeed, I do have an official sim. Are there reasons to update to a newer baseband? I'd like to understand if I should indeed update it since I have a "legit" sim or not. I have, though, thought about trying another sim to see if it would work on an iphone for kicks, but not really 100% I would go down that road.

I'm going to try the update path and see what happens. I don't suppose it will hurt anything and I'm very strong with *nix systems and Mac OS X so I can poke around in the syslog to check things out and watch for issues.

Thanks again for your input! It's nice to have someone distill things out of all the static.

Shani, thanks, that absolutely makes sense. I have always previously used PwnageTool and I had not understood enough about redsn0w apparently. :D

It is an '09 purchase, from about 1.25 year ago.

Baseband is at 05.14.02. Frankly I don't mind updating it or not. I'm not having any problems with it. What advantages / disadvantages are there going either way?

So finally, it seems every time with this phone so far I've had to do a complete insane restore that wipes everything out. Is there a method to UPGRADE the unit with all files intact vs the standard DFU mode through iTunes that throws things back to a restart and having to install all Cydia / dpkg packages again and re-setup my symlinks from shell?

Need some advice on the appropriate actions to take on updating a 3GS 4.1 to 4.2.1. I had the following experience so far and very much need steps to appropriately address, fix or install it as I've either missed something or run into an odd unknown bug in the process:

Just ran redsn0w 0.9.6b6 on Windows after it continually threw back an unrecoverable error on Mac OS X. The 3GS with a week 27 date, and thus is the older model, booted properly with the verbose option (which was not enabled previously) and appeared to write all files properly and then reboot again to full functionality (again, with verbose boot), ended up with the 4.1 iOS version showing. It appears that in both the System Preferences -> General -> About AND in iTunes the phone is showing up as 4.1 even after the firmware was updated, supposedly, to 4.2.1.

Additionally, I am not seeing any indication in Cydia of the new shsh blob being updated to 4.2.1 or such...

Any thoughts on what may be happening here?

I've got a 3GS that has been JB'd on each OS update. I have had problems the last couple times getting a JB image installed. with 4.0 I ended up having to use an image that was generated by sn0wbreeze as for some strange reason no matter what I would do, iTunes would not allow the update.

Now I'm trying to get 4.1 to "stick" however the only way I've been able to do it so far is to use limera1n after an itunes "proper" upgrade (I tried every other method under the sun prior to that from prerolled ipsws to pwnage tool to sn0wbreeze, etc.). The problem I have, however, is that with limera1n there is simply not enough space on the root volume and subsequently, as I'm a developer, I run into a wall once I install a few libs.

Any thoughts on what I should do to get around this issue and to be able to have a larger root volume now? I'm not sure if any options exist after a limera1n jb and stepping back into the pwnage method, but I'm very much wanting to get this set up properly once again. Each restore attempt to a pwnage or such image now yields the 2005 or 2006 err code.

Anyone familiar with using lsof on iOS 4 or if there is a way to get ktrace/strace/dtrace working?

I posted a comment last night and the moderator chose to not post my comment. I am quite concerned about this as it did not violate principle 9 or value 12. It was designed to help Glenn and our cause. I feel very violated and we desperately need Glenn to hear this comment. Please, if you will not post it, at least forward it on to Glenn so that it may help our cause. It was from my username and was posted last night/this morning depending on your time zone. Thanks and kindest regards.

Hi Glenn, I think it's important to call folks out and really take a hard line as you do, however I felt that this was crossing the line. I served a mission some years ago and have had some very dramatic experiences and this brought some memories flooding back. I thought that your guest was very professional, courteous and very much tried to carry on a humane and meaningful conversation. Not saying that he was right, but he tried. My memories came back as I felt as though I was the missionary again in his shoes, trying to explain something professionally that I wanted the other party to understand and you were like unto the minister railing with veins popping out of his neck and forehead from anger.

Again, you are *awesome* and truly observant of the issues we face today. My family watches your show rather religiously and it is something that my spouse and I profoundly enjoy as we are like minded when it comes to our observations and ability to agree with you. This just really pressed even you too far tonight. I felt that you could have listened more and made a much more powerful show if you were just simply sat back, listened to him, took notes and then made all of your points in a logical and measured fashion versus it feeling as though you were about to explode all over the set and take him along with you.

Please keep up the good work, but please, please, please try to evolve the way in which you talk to your guests. It does not become you as you're higher than attacking in a negative light, plus my children watch you and learn a lot about debate and our current world from your tutelage and I certainly want them to see the very best that we can be in attacking our present and future problems by having a very positive yet firm role model aside from simply their parents.

Love you Glenn!
