Polina's notes on Internet Marketing class : Twitter for Dummies

I think it's great for just communicating in general too. On top of the multiple narrowcasting stories, I just stumbled upon Kogi (http://kogibbq.com/ ). The company consists of a food prep truck that tours around LA. They twitter their movements to their almost 8000 followers letting them know where the truck will be next. Lowers their overhead, gives them an engaged customer base. Such a fantastic idea.

Internet MKG 2009 : Social networking and business

I'm a skeptic too, Till. I can't imagine a situation ever where some random person I knew in 2nd grade would be able to leverage their contact with me to sell me something or work with them on anything. It's not that they're bad people, it's just that I don't know them in a professional context. I guess the argument would be that it's a generation Y-Z thing, but still – I'm sure that even they would find it a little weird. I also don't understand this whole "email is for communicating with grown ups" thing that facebook affiliated people keep on mentioning. (...and what's with the music kids listen to nowadays? Get off my lawn!)

Untitled : Left behind in the Twitter revolution....

Yeah, Twitter withdrew SMS to certain places a little while ago. It was costing them too much to send messages. http://blog.twitter.com/2008/08/some-sms-perspect... Though some areas have had this restored, I don't think the UK is one of them.

Untitled : Product Capsules

I like online product review sites a lot, (I use cnet a lot for my tech stuff) but to me they're only for research about features and whatnot. It's a whole different search when I'm actually ready to purchase. At that point, I find I gravitate to more traditional channels.

Michal Bohanes' blog : A little rant

Not true about the iPhone in point 2 - You could spend an arm and a leg to legally buy out the contract from somewhere with unlocked iPhones (France or HK). Goes against your loan statement though... Broadband is slow - but that's a combination of a lot of things. My personal beef with that is that I have a slower connection at the school's dedicated backbone than I do at my DSL at home.

Wince's Internet Marketing Blog! : Week 7 - About Brand Consistency

Though I agree that the comments are a bit overboard, the only thing they really do for me is make me not want to work for Ryan Air. When it comes to low cost flights, I think people accept that one of the trade offs is customer service. (Case in point - In other Ryan Air news, they are eliminating all airport service desks by January 2010 in favor of web only check in.) This event won't detract from their revenues one bit. It may even enhance with the free publicity they're getting.

Untitled : New Search Ads from Yahoo

I think this is really interesting because it's an amalgamation between search and display. Apparently Yahoo is releasing some analytics tools around this as well: http://www.wired.com/techbiz/media/news/2009/02/r...

Brett's Internet Marketing Blog : Viral Marketing - what works and why

I think looking at beer as a category is a perfect case in point about a weakness in viral ads. Save a handful, there aren't many beer ads that trigger an instant connection to the actual brand. Likewise with viral, ads are just bizarre and talked about - there's no connection to the brand being promoted. How effective is that?

That's a good point - I think there are a few good examples of how different delivery channels bypass traditional advertising. Maybe product placement and in-your-face subliminal advertising is the wave of the future? Worked for Reece's Pieces in ET and I ended up embracing Catholicism after that episode you mentioned.

cwandell : Why would I ever Twitter?

I do appreciate the occasional twitter and I find it interesting to know when people are about to have dinner or when they're painting fences... well... In all seriousness though, maybe it's generally useless but Twitter is an interesting way to passively take in people's personalities. There are people I follow on Twitter who I've never met in real life, but I feel like I know them from seeing their updates. There's a built up familiarity which is neat. It's facebook without all the drama. As an aside - I have 2 types of twitter contacts: People I actually know and people I find hilarious. How can you go wrong when you read tweets of this caliber: "Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon allow children to fulfill their dreams of living in an overly complicated competitive world of searing stress." @johnmoe or ""Will Daddy take out the recycling, Ellie?" "Eleanor, did Mommy forget to buy bananas?" Our daughter.

I've had a blogger blog for quite a while now and I had to tweak and prod CSS till it looked the way I wanted it to look. Then blogger went to advanced templates and I never really caught up. For the class blog I decided to use tumblr and I've really enjoyed the simplicity. It also integrates reasonably well into the offline blog editor I use - MarsEdit (http://www.red-sweater.com/marsedit/). I'm pretty pleased with both, actually. I find that tumblr can be customized the same as blogger, and is actually a bit easier in some places.

There's definitely no monopoly when it comes to search - Google does have a lead, but only 20% of the searching population in the US uses it exclusively. <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10157960-93.html..." target="_blank">http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10157960-93.html... Update: Oh hey, similar to the link above. - w

Polina's notes on Internet Marketing class : Twitter - new marketing channel

I was reading recently that there are a spate of companies coming out focused on direct marketing on Twitter. There's one service that analyzes keywords and sends @ replies with marketing messages. (http://www.twitterhawk.com/) There's another that helps monetize your twitter feed by essentially turning you into an affiliate. (http://be-a-magpie.com/start) Theoretically they're great ideas, incredibly focused and directed ads. In practical use, I don't think they're anything better than spam though. But I might be wrong, they may be wildly successful.

I don't really see Google as having a monopoly. There are loads of other search engines you can choose. Whether or not you trust the results is another thing entirely. I wonder what drives people's perceptions of search engine quality? I remember first using Yahoo, then moving Altavista, finally to Google exclusively for my searches. Not sure what drove that. The amount of information they have is staggering. Though this point leaves me strangely apathetic.
