That is correct, Mike, and indicates the author might me a bit behind the curve as far as published information goes. The response from SigEp National Headquarters is admirable and hopefully will result in the members not being burdened with a misguided judgment. However, his main point is that the greater injustice is that all the members of the chapter are being sued for no other reason than THEY ARE ALL MEMBERS OF A FRATERNITY - without regard to whether they actually were involved in the incident. As he pointed out, if this had happened with another organization it is doubtful that all members would end up named in a lawsuit.

Update: using Google maps I did find a listing for a SigEp Founders plaque at the corner of Ryland St. and West Grace Street. That is, I believe, in the Monroe Park VCU campus. The street view was good enough to see the column and plaque but not good enough to get a good capture of it. Perhaps someone in Richmond could provide a usable picture?

Ryland hall is still standing and is on the campus of the University of Richmond. I don't have any information about it being part of VCU.

One troubling bit of information is the building is listed as being constructed in 1914 - 13 years after the founding of SigEp. Also, between 1901 and 1914 the campus was apparently moved. Perhaps someone with more detailed local knowledge of Richmond's geography, the two colleges, and their various locations could offer more insight.

If all transitions were handled like this there would be much less \"reinventing the wheel\". I also think that recorded webinars aimed at specific officer responsibilities would be a springboard to CLAs. Officers could come in with at least a good base understanding of what is expected and the sessions could focus on best practices.

I absolutely agree that a strong alumni base is the key to a long term successful chapter.�

How can a chapter in a small college town build a strong alumni base, especially a robust AVC? It is a tough sell to have guys drive for an hour or more from a large town once a month for a 2 hour meeting. There are technical answers to having meetings - products like Webex, Skype, and Google+ Hangouts make it easier to go 'virtual' - but you still have to get people committed to do the work of the AVC.�

A related issue is how to build alumni support and an AVC from scratch for a new chapter. I know there are methods that have worked and do work. Are they communicated well to existing chapters as well as new and newly�reorganized�chapters?

Bob, thanks for the perspective. I suppose the take away point is when you are representing SigEp, your chapter, or yourself you should act like someone your mother, sister, or daughter would be proud of.�

I did think the skit was well done, and if they had put in the small extra effort to make it more respectable it could have been fantastic.�

Looks like they didn't make it. A search on the HQ site (http://www.sigep.org/chapters/) does not show the chapter listed as active. Unless there is some adverse publicity to be managed HQ doesn't often go into great public detail about chapter closings. The chapter just fades away until, in a few years, the grand return can be trumpeted as a harbinger of a new and "more balanced" era.

This was followed up by a CLA (Dallas) to CLA (Irvine) Hangout on G+ with several people joining in from as far away as Birmingham AL. Positive responses from everyone I talked to in Dallas about the use of video chats w/multiple feeds for AVCs, mentoring from a distance, and other ideas.
