They didn't say the date but in "Right Place, Right Time" Ted said in the opening monologue " In May 2009...". Since it was in that episode and the next that he met Stella and Tony it stands to reason the events of those episodes take place in May. Since they open this episode with them talking about Ted taking the job as a professor, a job Tony got him, its only logical to assume this episode happens after the previous 2. But since this episode takes place during Teds birthday party, it opens a clear paradox since that is April 25th. Thats my view on the subject.
But as i said it doesn't make this episode any less awesome.

We don't know he doesn't have a masters degree. As for dating a student maybe (as was said in another popular sitcom) its just frowned upon. In other words Ted is gona pull a Geller.

Hope this can clarify the confusion:
The scene with Marshal saying "I can jump that far!" is from season 4's "Three Days of Snow".
The 3 big mistakes that Marshal commited in his life were shown in season 3's "Dowisetrepla" and don't include that scene. What we see is Marshal as a kid on the roof of his house with cardboard wings in his arms and baloons strapped on his back, as other kids (maybe even his brothers) incite him to jump (wich he presumably did). That was the 1st mistake, the 2nd was the haircut he did to himself on his wedding day and the 3rd was buying the house in that episode (Dowisetrepla).

The only complaint i have for this episode is the timming thing. I know i'm repeating myself but follow me here:
-According to last years goat episode, Ted's birthday is April 25th.
-He met Stella and Tony in May. Therefore Tony only proposed to get Ted that teacher job in May.
-If this episode happens in Teds 31st birthday party one of two things is wrong. Either his birth date was wrong last season (doubtful since future Ted said the date himself). Or this years surprise party was done a couple of weeks after the actual birthday.

But i'm ready to let that slide for now and just enjoy what was an awesome episode.
Also, for the 2nd year straight, Ted ends up at the hospital for the season finale. Good to see the same orderly giving Ted some grief.
So now Ted is a teacher and the mother will be his student... Season 5, BRING IT!!!

I just watched the episode and, unlike other weeks, i waited till i had seen it to read your recap. You hit the nail once again. And thatnks for the slutty pumpkin, i hadn't noticed that.
I don't know if its because its new or because its something i've been waiting for a long time but this has become my favorite episode for the season, maybe even the whole 4 seasons. It shows all those that were doubting the show and complaining of all the detours from the mother story that in the end, all the pieces fit and you need them all to see the big picture.
And the goat... i don't know what i was expecting after over a year of speculation but this is a good example of how a little can be a lot. So she "just" wrestled with Ted. I think i peed a little.
It would have been funny to see the people who live on that appartment where they leapt to asking "WTF?" - not really but... aren't they trespassing??!! JK LOL

The event with the goat is supposed to be revealed tonight in the season finale. As for the pinneapple, its already resolved. Ted said in the end of the "Pinneapple Incident" that they never figured out where the pinneapple came from. Consensus in other discussions in this blog seems to be that because of that quote from future Ted the pinneapple mistery will never be solved, at least by Present Day Ted and the rest of the gang. Though they like to tease us with the pinneapple every now and then.

I totally agree with you. I don't understand whats going on, most people are picking things that can be easily explained in-show like Barney's driving - he learned to drive after the Fiero incident - or totally obvious off-show events like Hannigan's pregnancy - Lilly gets pissed at a dirty joke. Accept things for what they are. Would people be happier if there was an episode with Barney in driving school? If they had done that, those same people would come out and say that the writers had wasted our time with an episode about Barney learning how to drive instead of focusing on Ted finding the mother. I accept that not everyone will like every single episode but there seems to be a whole lot of nitpicking lately that doesn't even make sense.

I think Cobbie will have the kid during the hiatus, she's expecting to give birth during this spring. So, unless she takes an extended leave, there won't be any need to make Robin disapear. And frankly, it would take a lot more than the peanut butter- jam joke to make Robin go. Unlike Lilly, she would find that one funny.
