Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Canadians Tag off U.S. on Whole Real Estate Thing

I grabbed the stats for the Niagara Region (living now) - homes $ vs median income, vs rent. No bubble showed up here - the bubbling still seems to be the usual suspects - Vancouver, TO, Calgary

I know this is OT, but I just want to see Bill Black put in charge of financial reform and have his plan 100%, completely implemented. No compromise. That way I can stop feeling such utter disgust. More pure outrage than bearish.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Readings: Galleon Wind-down, Solar, Biotech, etc.

When you say Biotech, are you referring to any bio based advancements broadly (bio-engineering, tissue engineering, bioinformatics, cybernetics, etc), or something more specific? Do you disagree with more VC money only, or also public money? How come?

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Persistence Running, Bourgeoisie Survivalists, and Toes & Things

I've been into working out for a while, and there has been changes in the body of knowledge from the 90's on. The emphasis now is on 'functional' movements - what is natural for the human body. So, the move is away from assistive technologies as they found these cause unnatural movements and lead to injury. Less is more. free weights vs machines, barefoot vs flashy nike runners, compound movements vs isolation. Crossfit is in. So is deadlifts, squats & press, pulls. Contrary to angel et al above, I've heard that the evidence is that activity, even intense, not only is not damaging, but protects joints. Many joint problems were due to improper musculature - again caused by things like running shoes, restrictive machines, etc.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : The Upside of No Sugar

it's all bad news stuff - sugar, corn syrup, etc. I have family dealing with the devastating damage this does to ones health. It's worse than most people realize. Besides diabetes you risk full blown cirrhosis of the liver. Destroys your life - perpetual nuasea, dementia via encephalopathy, ascites, the list goes on. Honey is less bad. Sugar alcohols are better, except maltitol - not good agave is iffy, Dr. Eades thinks it's worse than corn syrup I love erythritol. No bad news found yet, and it tastes great!

For some reason I have been really interested in Detroit. There was a blog about Detroit reverting back to nature. I was just googling for it, but got this instead: http://www.vimeo.com/2371774 Just watched the whole 26min. If you want to see nature shots go to the 17min mark. But I recommend the whole clip. Really well done.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Has the Econoblogosphere Decoupled?

This is a concern. My experience was that the commenting aspect of the medium was one of the best things out there. In the past I saw a good amount of criticism that forced everyone to up their game. There was considerable elucidation, refinement, and elaboration. Coupled with online speed and efficiency, it puts the MSM to shame. But I suppose groupthink or other biases can set in. ...hmmm, I did skim over posts that were low value to me, so I might be biasing here.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Sneak Peak at Weekend Reading

oops, a tag was left on --- http://www.ez2c.de/ml/solar_land_area/ As the page says, it is based on averages from '91 - '93 I'm going by these numbers. I don't have the numbers of energy loss for various forms of transmission or energy storage & conversion - ie. production of hydrogen, synthetic fuels, fuel cells, etc. The scenario I'm thinking about is high efficiency solar farms located in the solar hot spots, with a combination of electricity transmission & 'leveling' , and fuel manufacture (capture the excess in peak times).

lol, this is funny. You should read the emails I get from our new money manager - he's sent out a crisis resource list including sources for bulk dry foods, generators and firearms links (body armor too). But hey, at least I put in a positive post about solar energy just above - that's warm and fuzzy isn't it? Well, there is a time and place for everything, and it seems this is the time to clean house.

I'm really interested in solar, I believe it is one of the best (if not the best) long-term solutions. Here is a page doing a basic analysis of using solar for ALL of the world's energy needs (based on 2005 consumption). <a href="http://www.ez2c.de/ml/solar_land_area/" target="_blank">http://www.ez2c.de/ml/solar_land_area/ The author is assuming use of 8% efficiency panels. I believe it is possible to use the higher efficiency cells to get even more energy for the same land area. About the article, I think that with certain solar concentrator technologies, we can already beat coal. At least that's the claim.

But wait, there's more! California sees billions in losses from drought: http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSTRE51Q... There are some academic sites that monitor drought conditions (I'd have to find it) and this may be one of the worst years in a while... If I remember right, Texas is having the worst drought in a long time.
