DemConWatch : The Acceptance Speeches

I have to say, I disagree very much on this point. Every politician uses speech writers, and Mark Salter has been working with and writing for John McCain for years. Like any good speech writer, he has mastered McCain's voice, and he writes McCain better than McCain himself. There are many perfectly valid things to criticize McCain for, but I don't think this is one.

I don't think I would use the word choreographed, but I think it is definitely good practice in delivering a speech to pace oneself so that the climax is reached at, well, the climax.

Sadly, they do their part to perpetuate the party-split meme, and they do have their influence outside of the fringe. I don't find it so easy to disregard them entirely.

I always find it's nice to know what one's enemy is saying. Still, FoxNews' analysis reflects even less connection to reality than usual.

How do the Fox pundits find a lack of support for Obama in this speech? I just can't understand where they pull this crap from.

I wish we had a "Bubba cam" so we could constantly watch WJC's reactions. Now that would be entertainment.

I don't think so. What kind of problems? Sometimes it seems that new replies don't show up, but a refresh fixes that problem.

This speech sounds really inspiring. I can't wait until Michelle Obama is in the Connecticut area so I can make sure to see her. With any luck we'll even have Obama here before November, though I probably should hope that Connecticut is far too safe to warrant a visit by #1.

I wouldn't worry too much. Even if we are able to increase domestic production 5-10 years from now, any increase in production is likely to be far outpaced by increases in demand from China and India. Current prices are inflated by speculation, but I'm guessing we won't see prices below 90 dollars again.

Jean, to pick up on your earlier post about the "discovery" of millions of barrels of oil in North Dakota: I am pretty sure this is not exactly a new discovery; instead, I believe this refers to the Bakken (sp.) oil shale which has long been known to dwarf the reserves in Alaska. The problem is that this oil is very hard to get at, requiring drilling more than two miles down and requiring specialized techniques to extract the oil from the rocks. This oil is therefore very expensive, and it was not until oil topped $120 per barrel that it became economically feasible to drill for it. This is good news for North Dakotans as long as oil prices remain high, but is unlikely to affect the price of oil because any significant price drop would result in negative pressure on production.

Hmm. I wouldn't recommend tequila if your stomach is queasy. I do like to use equal parts boiling water and bourbon with lemon and honey for a cold, though.

Jean, it would be easier to follow if you would use "Post Reply" when responding to a new thread. The new comment system means we no longer have to have a flat thread. As a bonus, people can be notified of your response by email and can track threads their interested. :-) Anyway, If you're referring to her ABC link, it brought me to a Jimmy Kimmel bit about the rally which seemed on topic...

Hmm. That could work: start with a tour of his home state, emphasize his biography, return by way of Kansas where he can emphasize his middle-America roots, and cap it all off with an announcement in Topeka in front of as many people as he can gather that his running mate will be that daughter of Kansas and kindred spirit Kathleen Sibelius.

So will Barack be making an announcement today? My guess is not, especially after Bayh's statements to the Indianapolis Star.
