I just wanted to offer up some advice for others in my situation. If you really want to use your iPhone, and can't switch (or just don't want to pay ATT's ridiculous prices), you could try one of ATT's MVNOs. In short, these are smaller providers that use ATT's network. A lot of their plans are pre-paid and really, really cheap. Naturally, their data plans aren't going to hold up against ATT's. Of course for you data-intensive users, you might not find this attractive, but you'd never had to worry about the hopeless, dragging feeling for someone to release an unlock for you. With that said, I appreciate MN's work to the fullest extent and I can't thank him enough for all of the work he puts in for us compensation-free.
So I've been on Family Mobile (a T-mobile MVNO) this whole time with my iPhone. I'd consider myself a mid-range data user, and I was very happy with what I was getting from Family Mobile.
I took a look at some of the prices that the ATT MVNOs were offering, and it seemed pretty comparable to what I was paying with T-mobile and Family Mobile. So, if that's the reason any of you guys are staying with T-mobile and waiting for an unlock, it might be worth it to check out some of these.
The ATT MVNOs include H2O Wireless and Red Pocket. The coverage should be somewhat similar to ATT, but I can't say the same for data.
As always, do your homework before you jump to these carriers and just expect your iPhone to work. I did some searching around on the internet, and it seems like your iPhone should work without a carrier unlock just fine. Just don't take my word for it.

I remember reading that the Dev Team (or maybe just MuscleNerd) is only going to make a downgrade from 06.15.00 to an unlockable baseband, and not individual downgrade for each non-unlockable baseband. So everyone would go to 06.15.00 and then back down to something unlockable.
I guess at this point, I should just sell my phone?

I have an iPhone 3Gs on baseband 05.16.02 currently running iOS 4.3.5. I need to get to BB 06.15.00 in order to unlock.
This may seem like a dumb question, but do I need to bring it back down to iOS 4.1 in order to install the iPad baseband, or can I just do it while it's on 4.3.5? If so, what's the best version of redsn0w to use for this?
The goal is to eventually get my iPhone to iOS 5 with baseband 06.15.00 to unlock it.
Additionally, I have a legit AT&T sim card lying around that I can use to activate my phone. Hopefully this may be able to protect against some of the GPS/Batter life issues of 06.15.00
Thanks in advance.
