Internet stories from Korea : Korea is Naverland?

Google is trying to improve its search products by adapting to local differences in places such as Japan, Korea and China. They do this by employing local engineers that understand the cultural issues. Yet, it is interesting to see that Google hasn't been very successful in catching up with the local players. I'm not sure exactly why.

To deal with the cyclicality of comments, you can create a simple post like a cartoon mid-week and put a link to your latest blog (which you wrote on Sunday :) ). This worked for me!

Untitled : Facebook : Could malicious hackers break the trust build by the social network site?

Let' see if the security threats will force FB to change its philosophy of keeping the platform open and letting users and app developers to do almost whatever they want. Maybe FB can install mechanisms by which users control the quality (and safety) of applications.

Internet MKG 2009 : Social networking and business

One of my friends started a small party planning business and she first started advertising it among her friends on Facebook. She said that she is getting business from friends of friends through word of mouth. I guess this is one way to leverage social networks...

emc : Google pushing it too far?

I don't think this is very different than their existing model in web search. When you do a search you don't see sites created by Google. Yet if you click on a link next to the search results, Google will not share the revenue with the sites that came up in the search results. This all goes back to the last click attribution model that was mentioned in the last lecture.

Internet Marketing and myself : What can I sell online ?

wow, great find! Perhaps this model can be expanded to different areas. Imagine a micro-management model (analogy to micro-finance) where online collaborative capabilities are combined with physical actions and ownership to run a business. When would this make sense? Hmmmm, I will research to see if there are any such ideas out there.

Untitled : Android discussion continued

Lessons learned from the PC market show that attracting application developers is key in getting your platform to dominate. iPhone was able to do this simply because it was the only smartphone that was easy and fun to use with online services. This may no longer be true with Android and Palm Pre. To combat iPhone's popularity, Android is putting less restrictions on the application developers (similar to Windows on PCs) and Palm Pre is making developing applications easier technically (great support for web-based applications). I'm not sure how much more can Apple bank on the appeal of the iPhone to keep their ecosystem relatively closed.

next-gen Telepresence is very impressive! I used telepresence-like video-conferences in my summer internship on a daily basis. It was great and much more practical than I thought it would be! The system contributed greatly to my team's productivity.

The idea about consumer shift towards new media is interesting. I have seen statistics that clearly show the ongoing increase in amount of time people spend online, but I never thought of where that extra-time comes from... maybe socializing less in the physical world (going to movies could be a part of this)

Untitled : Marketing in the Technology Industry - Product or Technology Demonstrator?

This sounds like the typical "Innovator's Dilemma"... If a company is too stuck with their current customers and their needs, they're unlikely to be successful when a disruptive technology hits their market. In that sense, it is good that MS is experimenting with new technologies even though there isn't a proven market for it.

Week 1 : Google Map permeating the whole web ?

These malicious motives may also hinder innovation. Google must have axed many potential functions in Latitude for the fear of them being abused by ill-intentioned people. I'm sure their engineers thought of many other uses of location based data, which didn't make it to the final app :-).

Polina's notes on Internet Marketing class : Looking for a job? Use LinkedIn

Wow! I like the idea about tracking career paths because there appears to be evolving trends in the recruiting policies of popular companies. I haven't used LinkedIn much, is it an open platform? Does it have APIs that allow for apps to track such trends at a large scale?

Polina's notes on Internet Marketing class : More on Twitter - how Twitter search may kill Google

Remember how Google Trends is used to determine flu-outbreaks? Setting aside the issue of usage volume, I wonder if Twitter presents a better way to predict or track real-time trends. The difference between the two is interesting... In Google trends, you observe people's behavior in looking for published knowledge. Whereas in Twitter, you can see what knowledge is created in real-time. It's like comparing leading vs. lagging indicators or a combination thereof.

Untitled : Mo' Data, Mo' Targeting

Better targeted ads create a win-win-win situation, right? Consumers see more relevant ads, advertisers get more return on advertising and platform providers (Google,...) get mo' money with increased usage! Of course, it is not possible to do this without changing people's "perception" of privacy. . ISPs track (and sometimes sell) every little detail about their customers' online usage (in some anonymized way perhaps). This is an example of why privacy as we're used to in the offline world doesn't really exist online. However, we still get freaked out when we see a computer generated ad in Gmail that is too relevant... It is really about the perception of privacy.
