I've seen first-hand the devastation the presence of a novice in the office can create. Maturity beats the enthusiasm of the newbie; our culture's fixation on the novel is the source for at least some of the tension between pastor and people.

At the bottom, though, it's old Adam vs. new, the age old battle that rages not only in congregations but in our souls.

I was just thinking this morning how our children's children will never have heard of the Beatles, or if they have, they will not know their names. So much for being bigger than Jesus Christ. Perhaps our children's children will not know His name either.

If it is Cranach (I agree it is), notice the hand up--as if he were forbidding the children. A humble confession, and one those of us (mea culpa) who have ever rolled our eyes at the "noise" in church should share.
