I have eight very large south and west facing windows in my great room. I installed horizontal blinds close to the windows in the deep openings, then jute roman blinds flush with the walls. When the roman blinds are up, they look like a valence for the horizontals. I can use the roman shade to filter the sun or the horizontals to control the sun while still allowing my view of Chicago to come through. But when Chicago's winter wind “the Hawk” comes howling I can lower both shades for maximum insulation.
