The battles were so awesome, and the accompanying music was just epic. I also loved that phaser battle near the end. I'm not a big Star Trek fan, but the movie just made me feel giddy at the end.

To be honest, I thought, besides the characters and various plot points, the novel was pretty horrible. Especially the ending. While it's not the best movie, I did love the movie more than the actual novel itself. Even though it still had that ridiculous ending.
