WordPress blog at tegeorge.com : Remembering The Blind Side?

Thanks for dropping by David. Lifeway's on-line store listed Osteen until 2010 and our local store carried his titles until about the same time. By using one book as an example I'm afraid I mader it easy for the discussion to veer away from the main point of the pitfalls of legalism. To Save a Life is still featured both on-line and in the stores nationwide. There is a double standard there for some reason.

I must now offer a retraction and apology to LifeWay. The chain no longer carries Joel Osteen. The stores did offer Osteen's books until early 2010 but no longer do. Though they do carry a load of T.D Jakes, whose theology is almost as skewed.

My contention is that some Christians have no problem being "middle of the road" about things for which there can no compromise (the necessity of Christ) but it's their way or the highway when it comes to secondary matters. So sad.

Some people may think this is proof that Southern Baptist hate but I doubt that was the motive of the pastor who wanted The Blind Side removed. I'm sure he sincerely believed he was protecting shoppers in some way. To this day, if my mother read the words I used at the end of this article she would be mortified because in her mind "good Christians don't talk that way". Legalism, not necessarily hate, is the problem.

You are always the encourager Nicole and I appreciate it. Because fiction is a man or woman telling a tale that is why it is a better medium for questions and answers. Too many works of fiction have been elevated by some almost the level of inspired Scripture. In truth often times that is not the author's fault but something to be aware of nevertheless.

WordPress blog at tegeorge.com : Celebrating the Detours of Life

A well-published friend once posed the idea that he thought many writers were so focused on being traditionally published because subconsciously they wanted validation. Only each individual can answer such a thing. But it isn't it great to know you don't have to see your name in print or receive a royalty check for validation! There is only well done that matters.

Honestly CAT, the ranting used to make me feel better but not so much any more. Most of the people in my local writer's group don't openly profess to being Christians and only a couple write what they would term Christian fiction. But all of them are far more open to faith based fiction than a lot of the people I read out there on blogs written by Christian writers bent on bashing the CBA. All I hear from such people how Christian fiction alienates non-believers, isn't believable, and is poorly written.

You have the plot of the story tagged pretty well. It isn't a science fiction novel but the story of two people deeply in love yet separated out of time and place reminds me of the TV show Fringe. And, for me, that's a good thing. Read my article I Hate Romance and you'll see what I mean.

Actually, I think there are many who would like all things Christian to be confined to inside the church walls. You sense my confusion with some who tag all Christian fiction as "too preachy." I agree, extended "come to Jesus" monologues do not make for good fiction. But to write about characters who actually go to church or pray from time to time makes a story too pushy doesn't sit well with me.

I understand we all have different tastes. But it is sad to think some of the classic novels and movies of a couple of generations ago would never be given a chance in this fast paced, instant gratification world we live in today.

WordPress blog at tegeorge.com : Death to Ego Propaganda

So true Alan. But this giving spirit is not isolated in authors like Athol Dickson. One of the reasons I get so irritated with talk I hear about Christian fiction "preaching to the choir" or being not "real" enough is what I have experienced first-hand in several CBA authors. Many are far more than writers and writing is far more than a personal passion or business. When I interviewed Brandilyn Collins about her very personal novel that had Lyme disease almost as a character, I found her to have the same heart as Athol. She noticed in my review of the book that my son and I have both have MS. A few days later she emailed me to say she had added our names to her prayers cards she uses as she runs 5 miles every morning. That impressed me for several reasons: she read my review, she remembered a brief 1 sentence snippet from the review. she took the time to write a lengthy email and then pray for my son.
