It bears directly on the Hiss Case. I was asked something about the economic problem of Communism. I answered, citing Dostoyevsky: 'The problem of Communism is not an economic problem. This quote seems appropriate here. Snyder is quite correct. In Ayn Rand's voice Chambers heard the radicalized deification of Man and intuited the consequences of such brazen idolatry, an ego-driven rashness thatechoes in the totalitarian butchery of Nazism, Communism, and unbridled Capitalism alike.

Chambers is right about Rand; Snyder is right about Beck. Both commentators are good men, and Beck, as Snyder suggests, is a quick study and a fast learner--hope he has the opportunity to see this minor correction. Alan, have you considered sending your comments to Beck directly?
