Big Government : Mr. Beck, Meet Mr. Chambers

A quote from Whittaker Chambers (Witness): \"Of the mayhem that followed [during his Meet the Press interview], only one question and answer seems worth remembering. It bears directly on the Hiss Case. I was asked something about the economic problem of Communism. I answered, citing Dostoyevsky: 'The problem of Communism is not an economic problem. The problem of Communism is the problem of Atheism'\" (711-712).

This quote seems appropriate here. Snyder is quite correct. In Ayn Rand's voice Chambers heard the radicalized deification of Man and intuited the consequences of such brazen idolatry, an ego-driven rashness thatechoes in the totalitarian butchery of Nazism, Communism, and unbridled Capitalism alike.

Chambers is right about Rand; Snyder is right about Beck. Both commentators are good men, and Beck, as Snyder suggests, is a quick study and a fast learner--hope he has the opportunity to see this minor correction. Alan, have you considered sending your comments to Beck directly?
