It would seem so until you remember that you only get that pay raise IF you go out and raise the support for that pay raise. Sometimes just pulling the financial belt a little tighter seemed preferable to going on furlough to ask for more money.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : The guy writing the check during the offering.

Love it! Our church has used "the box at the back" since it was planted over 25 years ago. New people are always a little shocked and confused at first that we don't take an offering during the service. The thing that most surprises them (and sometimes us) is how abundantly all our financial needs are met without having an official time of offering or even mentioning the "box at the back".

Big Mama all the way. She is hilarious & clever & a great storyteller. And so is The Bloggess. 6 Year Med writes like no other. And Justin Taylor helps me get through my workday with all his great audio & video downloads. And of course, every day M-S starts with my SCL fix.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Believing the 2-Star Reviews too often.

I ran into my local Borders to pick up SCL for my nephew's birthday. Nothing. Not one SCL book to be found there in the "Religion" section. On my way out, it occurred to me that I should check the humor section...I mean, *I know* the book is hilarious, but I was very skeptical that Borders would recognize it's humor awesomeness. But there it was. It was a Booty, God, Booty, moment...SCL there among some of raunchier humor books out there. I purchased two. My nephew, 23, LOVED it, and his family too. He read a large portion of it to them on the way home from the restaraunt and they emerged from the car laughing and talking about their favorite essays. Thanks Jon! I can't wait to gift the second copy and again get credit for giving a terrific birthday gift!

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : The guy who takes credit for an answered prayer request.

Oh Jon. That was good! I do the opposite too...tough stuff going down in my kids' lives, church struggling, husband's job is difficult? Just blame me, because I haven't been a faithful prayer warrior. Really, Debby? You think God is restrained by your lame prayer life? Do you really believe He's all wringing his hands, distraught, "Oh how I'd love to do a work in this, but right now I'm powerless, if only Debby would get to prayin'" Uh....I don't think so. Well, actually, I guess I do... Would someone pray for me?

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Caption please.

Wow...that reply took me offguard. I am really sorry. In my ignorance, I thought I was making an observation or a lament; never thought of it as a complaint. I still come here everday, still find humor and blessing...I just felt some book overload. Maybe I don't understand the comment section. I know I'm not the best communicator but, wow, oh wow, I never intended to be hurtful and or demand a lengthy defense of what you choose to do with your site. Again, I'm sorry. Although the last sentence you wrote may feel like a summary of what I was trying to say, let me assure you it does not capture my intended comment at all. What you've done here at SCL is enough, more than enough. And if you shut it all down tomorrow, or changed it's direction...I would be sad but I'd never say you hadn't done enough. You've done/said things here that have and will forever impact the lives of your readers. You are hilariously funny, daringly vulnerable, spiritually wise and full of grace, an engaging communicator, and the first person I ever "met" who not only understood my so called Christian life but gave me permission to laugh over it's unique quirks and culture. We won't agree on how much book is the right amount of book, but know I respect that SCL is your site to use as you wish and I'm not asking you to give any more (you have no obligation to me or anyone else to provide a certain amount of content). I'd imagine (perhaps wrongly) that there is an intensity and pressure in your life right now that is both exhilarating and exhausting. I wish for you and your family all that God intends through this site and book, and for his peace that exeeds the stupid foibles and comments of his people. With apology and appreciation, Debby

Anon, I've been thinking the same thing lately. Not hatin' on Jon here loyal SCL fans. This is still the first site I go to every morning and Serious Wednesdays are the BEST. Yes, Jon is incredibly gifted and insightful and hilarious. That has not changed. It just feels like the book has hijacked the site.
