I'm the Community Manager for Brightkite and my account was deleted as well. Trust me, the people who were affected were completely random. As far as the mobile numbers go, when you submit your mobile number to a service to receive notifications you'll find it has a lot to do with a web based, social networking site.
This was a very poorly timed mistake on our part and we're working as fast as we can to correct it.

You can ignore people now by visiting their profile and blocking them. This prevents you from seeing their activity and them from messaging you.
