TechCrunch : Diaspora, The Open Facebook Alternative, Soars Past $50,000 In Micro-Funding [Update: Now Past $100,

Fail. First "diaspora"? Really? Why do open source products always have such bad names? I dont even know if I spelled it right, I doubt I am saying it right, and quite frankly "diaspora" sounds like some kind of anti-depressant. Really just a wretched, depressing name. Second--*nobody*, I mean nobody, cares if a product is open source. Selling yourself on being open source and hoping to hit the mainstream is automatic failure. Firefox, for example, doesn't sell itself as open source. It sells itself as being a fast, flexible alternative to IE. If all Firefox focused only on being open source, it wouldn't have been nearly as successful. Diaspora or whatever will *not* win facebook because it is open source--it will win only if it is a better product than facebook. If all it took was being open source, Linux would be in widespread desktop use years ago. So my two cents -- #1, ditch the name pronto and #2, who cares if it is open source--that should be on the "developers" page only.

TechCrunch : Digg's Biggest Problem Is Its Users And Their Constant Opinions On Things

it isn't just bury brigades that turned me off from digg. It is the constant whack-job stories that get voted up and the horrid comments that go with them. I think I stopped visiting digg around the time I saw a highly voted article questioning the authenticity of the moon landing. Plus the constant Ron Paul idiots--it isn't bury brigades that are the problem, it is the special interest groups that spend their live getting spam voted to the front page. Seriously, the whole site was about as mature as something out of junior high. Digg won't go mainstream until they kick out the entire swath of immature users and replace them with adults. Since that will never happen, digg will fade into obscurity.

Now if we can only get the city to fine people who dont de-ice their sidewalk. Back when I used to live a few houses down from a country club (only a few blocks from Ann Rule, actually), it was part of the covenants to do so. Now that I live out here, people never do it. Go figure.

deep fried dog is so lower class though. The upper echelon prefer their rack of dog "BBQ'd" to perfection by their servants. I know I do. I wouldn't be caught dead eating deep fried dog. I might lose my country club membership. (ps: still no wind on capitol hill)

Just make sure to cook the dog outside to avoid CO poisoning. Watch out for the coyotes though, they can smell Rack Of Dog from a mile and a half away.

well, you have to charge your cell phone and laptop batteries too... (funny though, if you have a beefy UPS for your desktop computer, you can usually use it to power your Cable Modem/DSL + wireless router for a good four or five hours. Your laptop battery might die before your ups does... and for some reason, you never loose phone (DSL)... dunno if you loose cable though)

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Dangerous winter storm approaches Western Washington | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | News

This is actually one of the most challenging areas to forecast in the country. There is a lot of geography, mountains, and other assorted variables to really make predictions hard. The meteorologists who work here are no amateurs, indeed if you work here, you get respect... it is like the place to be for the field. You can't be a young fresh from school kind of guy like you get in the great plains--those guys have it pretty easy. One thing I've learned is to never trust anybody but the local weather guys. If it is on the weather channel, your task-bar weather thing, or some other national news source, odds are it is wrong. You really have to know how stuff works around here, and even then all you can do is make vague guesses at what is gonna happen.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Tow trucks rescue charter buses dangling over I-5 | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | Local

Denny is closed. Olive is one way and wouldn't go from the exit ramp to downtown. Summit is too narrow for all but the number 14 bus (who knows the area). I'm surprised this part of Thomas St. wasn't closed. Two blocks away, Mercer st. has a cute little road cone in front of it as if to say "warning: you better live here and know what you are doing if you plan to drive down this street". Why didn't Thomas have that charming little road cone too?

The thing is, if you are heading downtown and take the olive way exit and dont know what you are doing, you can sometimes get lost. It isn't very obvious how to get from the freeway to downtown. Worse if your "normal" route (the only one you know) is closed, there isn't very many places to turn around. I live three blocks from the accident, and trucks always try to turn around in front of my apartment... very few can do it and not hit traffic signs or cars. Probably the best route for them to have taken was to keep going down Bellevue Ave and then go under the freeway at Lakeview Bvld and come back via Eastlake. It would have been way out of the way, but there is no steep grades to go down either: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Olive+W...

The funny bit is, while I was down on melrose checking this out, people were stopping in the southbound lanes to take pictures. If any of you were stuck going south, that is why. Same thing happens during the 4th of july and during new years. Idiots will stop their cars on the freeway to look. Too bad the state patrol had their hands busy or they could be nailing these people with tickets. That said, I suppose I'd slow way down to look too. I mean, it isn't like you are see two buses hanging off the edge of the retaining wall while you drive down the freeway. Thank god nobody going on the onramp got hit with any of the debris. I'm just glad nobody was seriously hurt...
