go watch what's eating gilbert grape. it's the first thing i saw him in and i literally thought he was mentally retarded. he was fantastic. i never have gotten him as a leading man, though - a little wimpy, pretty boy who can't pull off the natural masculinity that the characters need. i did enjoy him in the departed, though.
