Accepting his qualifications to analyze media (and give any legitimacy to that analysis) is no different than accepting the qualifications of a concrete finisher to perform reconstructive dentistry (do fillings). More succinctly, you need a formal education in media and journalism before you know enough to provide a professional opinion. You just cannot wing-it when it comes to media ethics and media law. Basically, the lack of formal education in the field is the biggest problem in so-called professional journalism today. Both right and left are guilty of politicizing the military. Gays openly serving is a more of a political than a social issue at this point. That said, the implementation of these kinds of social changes into the military community is best left to those who actually have some skin in the game, and can literally lose those skins when well-intentioned but naive people dabble where they have no business. Once a decision is made, then the military can figure out how to deal with it. At this point, it's just confusion. Dan made a decision to be liberal. But keep in mind too that Dan had his butt kicked by the Chicago police while he was covering the violent Democratic convention in 68. Dan's career ended with a patronizing attempt at professional self-regulation. But alas, when truly professional correspondents leave the field like so many have what you end up with is a college dropout covering the White House for a major news outfit.
