Big Journalism : Daily Beast: John Avlon Pronounces Right-Wing Talk Dead, But Is It?

This is what happens when you have people attempting to draw conclusions when working far out of their field of expertise. Being a speechwriter and blogger obviously didn't give him the chops to crunch ratings. What is this guy's credentials to do media analysis? I can't even find his educational background on the Web.

Big Journalism : Top 20 Most Useless College Majors: Journalism Is #1

Sorry, I can't accept the premise. It's not really journalism unless you practice using elements and standards of the profession. Because of the growing information glut, never in the history of reporting has a good education in journalism been more important. You have to know what you are doing in order to know better....

Big Journalism : Politico Defines Bias with Characterization of Palin Speech

Actually, Andy Barr is nothing more than a political blogger and his opinions need to be treated as such. He has no business being referred to as a reporter or a journalist. He is just another in a long line of people working in the field (from Chuck Todd to Diane Sawyer) who are not educated at journalists. Barr earned his bachelor’s degree in government. You cannot expect him to know any better.

Big Journalism : Media Matters Still Has Trouble With the Word "Provider," Owes Correction

This episode sort of proves my point when I say people who don't have a journalism or communications education don't have any credibility when writing media analysis. They really don't know what they are talking about and they really don't know how to do even junior college level reporting to find out....

Big Journalism : CNN’s Ratings Boosted by Citizen Journalists

I don't know if I'd call it journalism but they are obviously reports. That said, I'm not sure so-called citizen journalism is the future. I'm not at all sure what the future will bring. Of some things I am certain: there are a lot of undocumented journalists out there who haven't a clue about media ethics, the framers' intent in the First Amendment, the role of the press as the Fourth Estate and least of all the mechanics of journalism as a profession. (This includes a number of folks in the employ of mainstream media outlets, too.)

Big Journalism : How the Left Keeps Drones In Line: the Origin of Fox News Attacks

If I've said it once I've said it a hundred times: if your professional media experience isn't founded on a college education in communications or journalism (not Poly-sci, not English Lit, not Public Administration) you have no business portraying yourself as a media professional and surely not as a media analyst. It's actually pretty insulting.

NYT's undocumented journalists are mad about the Web's undocumented journalists. That's rich. No, not Frank. But speaking of undocumented journalists at the Times..... Well, in a world where anyone can play reporter we should just be thankful that they can't do as much damage as someone playing doctor.

Big Peace : Brainless North Korean Leader Holds Binoculars Upside Down During Military Parade

Honestly, I don't think they are upside down. The bridge on which the two halves are mounted is on top, and that's correct. (The round silver disc covers the bridge in the middle, the viewer's side may be marked with a degree scale.) Rather, he has adjusted the two halves angled up instead of down. I've had loads of binocs and many of them don't have a stop to prevent this. It's a bit uncomfortable but not upside down.

Big Journalism : A Case Study: How Media Matters Invents Bigotry Charges to Protect Soros

What bothers me most about folks like Mr. Boehlert is that they have no credentials whatsoever to be dabbling in media analysis. Accepting his qualifications to analyze media (and give any legitimacy to that analysis) is no different than accepting the qualifications of a concrete finisher to perform reconstructive dentistry (do fillings). More succinctly, you need a formal education in media and journalism before you know enough to provide a professional opinion. You just cannot wing-it when it comes to media ethics and media law. Basically, the lack of formal education in the field is the biggest problem in so-called professional journalism today.

Big Peace : Time for Sec Def Gates to Hit the Bricks

Having been a contemporary military observer (and having written a milblog for the last five years), my observation is that Gates it trying to keep the military from becoming more of a political football than it already is. Both right and left are guilty of politicizing the military. Gays openly serving is a more of a political than a social issue at this point. That said, the implementation of these kinds of social changes into the military community is best left to those who actually have some skin in the game, and can literally lose those skins when well-intentioned but naive people dabble where they have no business. Once a decision is made, then the military can figure out how to deal with it. At this point, it's just confusion.

Optics is a branch of physics . How do you take seriously the writing of anyone who misuses the language? Call me a wonk, but apostrophes don't create plurals, might is the past tense of may and nouns look really funny when used as verbs.

The thing with Dan is this: he, unlike the Chuck Todds, Katie Courics, Diane Sawyers, Anderson Coopers, and Campbell Browns, actually holds a degree in journalism and has been taught the profession and the traditions. Dan made a decision to be liberal. But keep in mind too that Dan had his butt kicked by the Chicago police while he was covering the violent Democratic convention in 68. Dan's career ended with a patronizing attempt at professional self-regulation. But alas, when truly professional correspondents leave the field like so many have what you end up with is a college dropout covering the White House for a major news outfit.
