I'm always confused when a new restaurant opens up in the same space one previously failed, and serve the same type of food. That business failed for a reason; how is the new business going to be successful in the same space without having a point of difference?

I think this is why some of the best web apps out there come from someone's own needs. They couldn't find what they wanted in the space, so they made it themselves. Obviously, this doesn't guarantee success, but chances are they are different enough from the competition that they'll attract others with similar needs.

Also, why is Lynn's Paradise Cafe so special?? You didn't tell us!

My addition to your list is this: pay attention to what stuff is yours as you go through security. I've had people walk off with my shoes because they thought they belonged to them, and had to go running after them in my socks. Not cool. Only take your own stuff, people.

I have serious problems travelling light (heh, I *am* a girl), and therefore always have to check a bag. But I make sure my carry-on contains the minimum to get me through 24 hours in my destination if my bags are lost; gum, contact solution & my glasses, some moisturizer, and any medication I might need. All in sizes less than 100mL (or whatever the US equivalent is). Anything else can be bought.

Some interesting things to think about there. Word of mouth (in whatever form, online or off) is quite possibly the most important form of marketing there is. The company I work for has never advertised our business beyond our local Yellow Pages, and sponsoring my boss's son's hockey team. Yet we've been in business for 13+ years and put customer service above all else. We've never been hurting for work, and it's all been due to positive word of mouth.

It's been said that if someone has a good experience, they may tell one person. But if someone has a bad experience, they will tell everyone they know. And it's true.
