This video was amazing. I thought it was the cutest thing to see what this little boy was saying. They were completely adorable. It's just so sad to know that it couldn't work out between them because of where they were born. Skin color or race or ethnicity or any of that shouldn't matter at all. It's just sad that we are separated because of something that shouldn't matter at all. Personally, i believe that there are many different people that we are compatible with, but I am sure that there is someone who is very compatible to every person. Maybe the most compatible. And if things like race and ethnicity and where you are from holds people back from finding that person, then how could be know for sure that we are with the right person? I mean yeah, obviously we can't meet every single person in the world, but it's nice to see that besides all the restrictions those two little kids still considered each other best friends.
Then to see this man give his kidney to a woman just because she is a nice person? It is just so kind of him to do that for her. It really goes to show that personality should be/ is the most important aspect in deciding how you feel about a person, or your prejudices. It's obviously okay to have a prejudice against a person if its strictly about their personality, but it shouldn't have anything to do with where they were born or anything of the sort. I just never could understand it, and still have yet to.
The very end of that little kid video was so powerful. To say "Our kids are colorblind, shouldn't we keep them that way?" is just like the most beautiful thing I have seen in a while. It is so true, and we definitely should. I wish more people felt that way and didn't think about these things. If everyone who had children preached to their children to be "colorblind" then maybe we could change the world. I don't know what its going to take, but it will take something of that sort.
Kids like that are the ones who prove that all this hatred is just something that has come from social standards. It is not inherently built in us. We wouldn't feel this way if it wasn't for generations behind us. So why do we still follow it? Why don't we cut the damn strings and ignore our prejudices? I hope someday people realize this, and that we actually do.

16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - What about health care? · 0 replies · +1 points

Healthcare is a completely different issue and it is just really difficult to combine the two issues and come up with a resolution. I mean, damn, I wish car insurance could just be given to me. Oh and life/home insurance... that'd be nice. So everyone can just have equal rights to everything regardless of how they worked in their life, or what roads they took to be successful. Maybe college should be free too, because everyone deserves an education. You know.. everyone deserves food, so why don't we make that free too. We should just be offered all these things because we deserve them. So lets just completely socialize our country. And we can work, and just not make any money, because all of it can go to these things that we deserve because of our basic human rights. I probably shouldn't even post on this because I obviously don't agree with this stuff to begin with. I mean, yeah in a perfect world everyone would get everything they need just because they are citizens or human or whatever. But our worlds' not perfect. We live in society based upon money, as annoying as it is. Combining these two issues is just way too complicated because neither of them have a perfect solution.

I just don't understand why a group would go as far as like threatening people because of a damn TV show. Like South Park makes fun of EVERYTHING. I can't even count how many times that show has made fun of Jewish people and definitely Jesus and Christian people. No one actually takes it seriously or gets angry enough about it to threaten.. like honestly, they are words. I just am completely astounded by this. Plus, why did the creators of South Park listen and bleep out the words and references to Muhammad? I mean yeah it might be scary to get threatened, but who gives a shit. It should be a free world when it comes to opinions and words. It's just so frustrating.

I agree with this comment. Everything that Sam showed us yesterday really just made me open my eyes to the reality of the situation. I never really had an opinion about illegal immigration, but now I really do. I obviously understand that we can't just open the door to everyone because it would probably flood the economy, but I agree that we should leave the situation in the hands of people who understand and work the system. I hardly even understand the economy enough to have an overwhelming opinion on the matter, but it's terrible to see that we continue to push these people away who can't afford to come into the country. I mean i've been paying taxes, as well as my parents, my whole life. But I didn't have to pay to come live in America because I was just born here. They have to do all these crazy things to live in America, and even take tests that half of Americans would fail. It's just ridiculous. Honestly, immigrants that actually go through this process have more of a right to call themselves Americans then I think I do, after they learn all these things. And it made so much sense when Sam made the point that the vast majority of Americans won't work on farms, etc, because it's like too low class or some bull shit. And then they complain about not being employed and just claim a check every month of unemployment if they qualify. Which, honestly, most of the time people do. My sister is 24 and has a restaurant job, and ALSO collects unemployment. And she doesn't need it/ deserve it more than these people who are dirt poor. I don't remember ever having to cross a border or travel on a ship for months to come to America, and be denied, or even have to worry about that. My parents didn't either. So why should I be able to live here, and not them? If they are willing to work and help our economy prosper, then what is the big deal? And yes, obviously not every single immigrant is going to be coming here for honest reasons, or even to work. I am sure many come to sell drugs to idiotic Americans that will buy them. And yeah, that sucks because then we have to deal with spending money on jailing them. But in general, it just shouldn't be decided by a voting system, or the general public. Because I know that I don't know much about it, and I am sure many Americans just have opinions based upon nothing.

9/11 was in 2001. We went to Afghanistan in 2001 to avenge 9/11. We went to Iraq in 2003 because of the threat of weapons of mass destruction. Plus, if it still had to do with terrorism and to avenge 9/11, then why are we in Iraq? We are trying to stabilize their government, which isn't our business, or job. 9/11 was 9 years ago, we've been in Iraq for 7 years. Picking sides doesn't do anything but worsen the fight and the problem. Yeah, we need to target the radicals, and focus ONLY on that. And that is clearly not what we are doing.

I understand why they do it. I can't agree with them though. I am strictly against the death penalty, just because I do not believe that any human has the right to take the life of another human, and not based on any religion, just my morals. If someone killed my family, I would not want them to die. As terrible as that would be, and as much as that would completely ruin my life, I would not allow myself to change my morals because of this. Maybe it would be different if it actually happened to me, but filling your body with hatred and vengeance doesn't bring your family back. Obviously, in this case it is different, because they take their own lives as well, not living with the pain of hatred. Murder is murder to me. No matter what the circumstances are, it is still murder. I don't agree with war. You can't solve problems with violence, it just doesn't work that way. We have learned that from the time we were children. But somehow, it is okay if its during war. And it is okay to murder 29 civilians if we can get one bad guy. No, it's not. Everyone was given a chance to live. They deserve it. Killing civilians? Who did nothing, and just have to die because they were born/live in a country that some religious radical lives? Like the atomic bombs we dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki; was this justified? Killing all those civilians? I just can't put my finger on it.

I have a lot of things to say about this video/class. The video was fantastic. It gave me chills. But the class was even better. I have been saying these things for years, and it is nice to finally have someone of any intelligence speak about it to a large group of people. Honestly from day one of the Iraq war, as young as I was, I knew it was bull shit. But I went along with it and tried to support our troops or whatever. Then when we continued to stay after Saddam Hussein was captured and killed, I couldn't support it any longer. We knew there weren't any weapons of mass destruction, and we wanted oil. Now its 2010, and we went to Iraq in 2003. OBVIOUSLY the people over there think that we are terrible people trying to convert their country and take their oil. Do we think they are really just ignorant idiots? Every country has their intelligence and I am sure they understand what is going on. Sam hit is straight on. If I lived over there and saw the things they probably see about the USA, I would be pissed. No, I wouldn't fight, because in general, I don't agree with war, no matter the circumstances. But I understand why they are trying to protect their country. Who the hell do we think we are? Our government has it's own problems and we live in a society based upon something that was written hundreds of years ago, and was meant to change. So why are we trying to inflict our problems and government on another country? We had the freedom of having a revolution and fixing our government to our own standards as a free country should be able to do. So why couldn't Iraq? Yeah, Hussein was possibly a threat, so we took him out and let the people do what they wanted with him. But after that, it's not our responsibility to tell them what government they should use. That's like what Communists did and Nazis. So if I lived there, I would think that possibly the USA is trying to expand itself. I mean, look at the ridiculous things people thought about all Muslims after 9/11. Just because a group of radical people did something terrible to our country, doesn't mean that all Muslim people are to blame. Look at the KKK. They killed hundreds of innocent people and claimed that their God agreed with them. And yeah, they didn't crash into buildings and kill thousands of innocent people, but I am sure that if they could have, they would. Their are crazy people in this world, all over the world. We should capture those radical people who did that to our country. That should be our ONLY focus if the USA gave a shit about their citizens and the families who lost loved ones that day. It's disgraceful that we are still monkeying around. Our world is going to run out of the supply of oil someday, so we need to stop going to war to get it, and instead think of new ways to create electricity.
I know I am ranting, but the way our world has become is insane. Most of us are ridiculously ignorant, racist, prejudice, and just close-minded. People need to open their eyes and just shut the hell up about their radical ideals and crazy prejudices and political drama. Maybe it keeps them all living, but its aggravating. We all only have one life and I cannot understand why we waste it hating people and blaming people and complaining. I don't know how to change the world, but I wish everyone would try.

Maybe you should actually think about what they claimed we went to Iraq for. I will quote George Bush for why we went to Iraq, "to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), to end Saddam Hussein's support for terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people." And yes, maybe now we are realizing that it was probably more about oil, but if you honestly believe that we went to Iraq in 2003 because of 9/11 then maybe you should do some research and stop speaking about things you clearly do not understand. We captured Saddam Hussein and he was killed, so now why are we still there? For oil. Plus, the KKK are Protestant which is a branch of Christianity, and lots of what they have done in the past is based off of their religion; so I'm pretty sure that radical beliefs can be dangerous in any way. And Sam was just trying to make us see what they think of us over there. He wasn't saying that the war actually is a Christian Invasion. He was trying to explain that Muslims that see those videos and hear those things probably think that is what the war is about. And if we were actually trying to avenge 9-11, our main focus would be on Al Qaeda. Just get your facts straight next time you have an opinion. It's frustrating.

Soc 119 has been a great class and I think Sam is a very intelligent and good person. This question is just rude and ignorant. Then drop the class. The class has made me think. Thats all he wants to do. He doesn't want to change our opinions completely so we follow him like some sort of cult. He's made this completely clear and maybe if people listened. I'm sure he loves how pissed people get at the things he says, because we are at least thinking about it in some way, where as before we probably weren't. At least now we can have some sort of educated opinion, instead of just talk out of our asses about things we don't understand. I just think this question is arrogant. What makes your opinion on this class correct? Honestly.. who cares what you think about the class?

Why do people have to affiliate with a color or even want to be affiliated with a color? Like i understand that it may be easier this way, but jesus, we are all people. It shouldn't be conflicting that you aren't affiliated with a color, i wish i could be in between so that i wasn't completely stereotyped as being white. And I'm sure so many people are saying, "oh its so easy for you to say that, you always had it so easy." Well, actually, yes, I personally have. But my family came here as Irish immigrants. So they didn't have it easy and came from absolutely nothing and busted there asses in school and became something. Just like I am going to do for them. But people always complain like oh I'm this color therefore its so much harder for me to do this. Well, oh I'm a human and not dead so it's so hard to live and so easy to complain so lets just do that our whole lives instead of just trying to make it easier on ourselves. Shit.
