Please consider how cars and bikes differ in their use of the urban space. Driving a car to or by a business is not the only way to patronize it. http://www.humantransit.org/2012/09/the-photo-tha...

I'd love to see the on street parking removed in this area. There are plenty of downtown parking garages. It would make Rods job better and make it easier for bikes, peds and buses in the area.

Note the suggested alternate route isn't complete. You would need to go over a mile to get to the other side of the tracks. So if you're a UCAR worker who bikes to work from the north you're F#!$ed. The build out of Wonderland creek has been delayed several times and should be fast tracked at this point.

Daily Camera.com: : U.S. 36 bikeway boon to cyclists, motorists, say officials - Boulder Daily Camera

As has been stated 99% of cyclists are also automobile owners. Are you suggesting people who ride bikes should be taxed twice? The US government bailed out the auto industry for billions of dollars and we ALL paid for that. You may remember the bike industry did not receive anything. Each car owner in Boulder has access to about 7 car parking spots. Car owners can park on most of these spaces for absolutely nothing. A car parking space in Boulder can cost anywhere from $7K - $35K. The war in Iraq was for obtaining control of cheap oil, you'll notice gas prices haven't gone up much in the past 8 years. Billions were spent to secure this resource for you car drivers so you can have cheap gas. So Bing while you think bike riders don't pay enough taxes we don't get the bloated free subsidies you do; auto industry bail out, free expensive parking and oil wars.

Daily Camera.com: : Boulder searches for parking \'balance\' - Boulder Daily Camera

You could ride your bike, or a B-cycle to transit. The average person can bike from south to north Boulder in 45 minutes or so. I've lived car free and bike centric in Boulder for the past 15 years. I've lived in various places around town and never had to commute more than 20 minutes. The reality is the majority of in town trips in Boulder are 3 miles or less; a very bikable distance. Note B-Cycle will be doubling the number of Boulder stations this summer. As for getting around with kids there is a whole new category of bicycles emerging called Cargo Bikes. These bikes are designed to carry stuff like kids, pets, groceries, garden supplies, home improvement supplies...you name it. What makes them even more effective is they're coming with electric assist motors that "assist:" you as you pedal. These designs makes carrying heavy loads a piece of cake and they take up far less urban space which reduces the need for parking. These bikes originated in Copenhagen and Amsterdam over a century ago and are starting to catch on here in the states in places like Portland and the west coast. Take notice as you travel about town and you'll see more and more long tails, trailers, front loaders and people getting around hauling stuff. This is good for all you car drivers because each utilitarian cyclist, be it a mother taking her kids to school or handyman hauling lumber from Home Depot, or heck someone riding downtown to meet a friend for coffee, is freeing up parking spaces for you. Boulder is an incredibly bike friendly city but people aren't riding for transportation enough to feel a true impact. When people like Zane come forward and say we need to put a pinch on parking, he knows that many locals are driving 3 miles or less on a regular basis. And we have programs like B-Cycle, Ego Car-Share, Community Cycles, RTD, Via and Go Boulder all geared towards helping people become less auto dependent. The future will be multi modal and Boulder knows it and is planning accordingly. Ride On!

No you don't need a car to drive to Boulder, there are options. Ever heard of RTD? Car-Share? B-Cycle? As for driving around looking for a parking space. If all drivers went directly to the parking structures they would be parked and off to their destination. But something about automobiles makes people lazy and incapable of walking a half a mile to their destination. I think a great solution would to remove all on street parking downtown, except for handicapped and moving it to parking structures. This would eliminate the cruising for a parking spot problem and increase the quality of life for everyone in the downtown area.
