Hmmm... It's weird because I certainly was taught growing up that conservatives were stupid and selfish, or brainwashed and uninformed and selfish. Turns out that is not the case. If you care (and I guess you don't), there is a whole book on how liberals are not as kind and giving as conservatives. Even those conservatives who have less money and time, give more time and money than liberals do to charity. So no, in no way do I see how dark and mean spirited is "synonomous" with conservatism.
