I, unfortunately, was not one of the lucky ones. I was raped at Tufts University in 2006, but I still think about it everyday. It has changed my life in every day possible. I was expelled from school after I started speaking out about being a survivor and the school ignoring my rape report and letting my rapist go free without ANY investigation. They thought that I was "crazy" and a liar. As a scholarship student they didn't think I mattered. I had NO money and no resources and I've been fighting for years to try and even partially reverse this injustice done to me. The Department of Education is investigating Tufts for violating Title IX, but it has been an uphill battle the whole damn way. I just wanted to say thanks for bringing awareness to this issue. I know that letting down rape victims is an epidemic at Tufts...and colleges across the country. It is a serious issue... I know, unfortunately, firsthand the dire ramifications of a system that does not properly prevent to address violence.

Ms Magazine Blog : White Christmas, White Santas, White Privilege

Clearly we need more programs like yours. Not only that, but we also need to make all schools actively engage with teachers to make sure they create an environment where students of all identities feel welcome and included. As a student of colour that went to a predominantly white prep school, I can attest that one day a year for teacher 'diversity training' is NOT enough.

Ms Magazine Blog : Silence and Sexual Assault on College Campuses

Thank you for speaking out. Even tho I was raped at college years ago, the effects of it and the consequences of the school's inadequate actions haunt me every day. Not a single day goes by when I am not reminded of what happened to me and how the system failed me.

Tufts University Survivors of Rape and Sexual Assault : Apparently Tufts Doesn't Care About Harassment of Employees, Either

I'm so sorry to hear about your experience. If you ever want to talk or want advice or support, please feel free to email me at blog@rapedattufts.info. What they did was wrong. This is why deans need to be trained on how to handle this stuff...and if they don't get it they need to get a new job. You should have a write to file against your abuser and the school who refuses to do anything. You're not crazy. You were being brave and sharing your story. I hope you get the peace and justice you deserve.

I hope I didn't scare you too badly! If you want to talk about how you can be prepared and how to work the system the Tufts to your advantage if you know someone who is assaulted, feel free to contact me - contact@rapedattufts.info It's sad that the administration honestly didn't care about me, but I am confident that the people who allowed my perpetrator go and to further oppress me themselves will be held accountable. You're starting an important, new phase of your life soon! You will be going to an amazing school and will get great opportunities. I hope your career at Tufts ends up a MILLION times better than mine. :) In my opinion, it's all about knowledge. Coming to this site already puts you MILES ahead of where I was while at school. best of luck!

Tufts University Survivors of Rape and Sexual Assault : Fighting Rape is Fighting Oppression - The oppressions a proper policy would fight

I think every situation is different. Not every family member is going to identify as a victim/sufferer, just like not even person who has been sexually assault views themself as a sexual assault victim. Fortunately, people can still get help regardless. Since my site and my activism focuses on campus sexual assault, the policies of a school cannot create rules that mandates or offers services to non-members of the campus community. Sexual assault affects everyone in different ways. I agree that talking about it without fear or shame will help eliminate the stigma that surrounds it which perpetuates the severe lack of resources available to prevent and treat sexual violence. Unfortunately there are a lot of boundaries to take down to battle the ignorance that allows to let sexual violence be so pervasive.

I created this site not to concentrate on perpetrators or on potential perpetrators. I first started this to concentrate on making Tufts University a safer place for everyone by pointing out the lack of an effective and comprehensive method to responding to and preventing sexual assault on campus. Sexual violence in any form is still a violent, traumatizing act and a lot needs to be done regarding its prevention and treatment after assault.

Seriously it's like the biggest slap in the face. If I've been wronged and then someone who WASN'T INVOLVED AT ALL says a statement that basically is calling me a LIAR, that's is really fucked up. At least say "we're looking into the investigation that took place then; we went to ensure that our OEO takes all issues of sexual violence seriously." They don't have to be denialist assholes.

Womanist Musings : Either Stand Up For Yourself Or Keep Getting Discriminated Against

While I see what you're saying and agree that hiding doesn't do anything, but not everyone is able to come out and stand publicly and take the heat that comes with it. While it's sad that this woman asked for help and then backed out, perhaps it wasn't her intention to just back out and let the activists do all the work. I right now am in the process of talking to the media and I didn't realize that they would want me to be "on the record." Coming out as a member of a marginalized group is a big decision, but I feel like ignoring how complicated the various issues at play for each individual doesn't help the greater cause. I mean, some people (maybe most people?) just can't take the heat or aren't ready to just yet.

Womanist Musings : Tiger Woods gets no love from the Black community, again

I could be wrong, but I always thought that the lack of embrace of Tiger Woods by the black community is because Tiger Woods doesn't identify as black. When people would ask about how he identified, he would make sure to list every ethnicity in his background. While most would consider him to be black, if he doesn't identify as such, why should the black community as a large feel like they have to love/defend him?

Tufts University Survivors of Rape and Sexual Assault : Drug-facilitated sexual violence: It's still traumatic

Sorry to hear that about your nanny. I think it is very important for schools to have policies that saw that victims of crimes won't have to worry about being punished for drinking if they were assaulted under the influence. Universities unfortunately have a lot to learn.

My blog has a new post about how sexual assault can still be traumatic even if the survivor doesn't remember it. http://rapedattufts.info/?p=163 And how administration at a college can take that knowledge and further traumatize survivors (like they do so well at Tufts right now).
