It was really moving to read about this compassion and the helpful nature many of them possess because it's not often that we hear about this. For men and women in their situation it's kinda hard to even believe that they are these amazing people because we always come to the question of: If they are such a good person why are they in prison? This is a valid question. But that shouldn't be the only one in my opinion. This letter brought to light for me anyways that these people aren't as heartless as we believe, granted they have made a big mistake and I do mean a BIG one....we still have to take into account that these men and women are just that men and women they are not mean dogs that need to be locked up and looked down upon but we still have to view them as human beings!
Wow this was beautifully written piece if it weren't for the fact of Sam saying this is from an inmate I would have never know. As a society we paint prison as this dark place with cruel people and for the most part that is true. But for a person to write something like this and being in the situation that they are in is something amazing. I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that the story being taken place in a prison and not only that these men have compassion for one another, are willing to help one another, and be....human. When we lock people up we have this mentality of we are locking up animals and I know I am guilty for that for the most part.
I really agree with what she is saying, but at the same time I do believe that being a woman is sometimes about appearances. When we get up and get dress we dress for other women not men. We want to look prettier than that other girl, we want that desirable figure that the girl in the magazine has, we want to be known as the gorgeous one that everyone envies. If you think about it we want the approvable of other women, we want the compliment of being called pretty, having a cute outfit on, and having a cute hairstyle. Men couldn’t care less about our appearances if it was up to them we would walk around naked.
People are sick and demented I believe! Who would think of a game like this?? You can grope and rape a young woman and this is suppose to be entertaining? Like what the hell is wrong with society? This is so disgusting forget for a second this is a game, this actually happen to women, and the makers of the game thought that it was a good idea to exploit many women's pain and secret shame. I don't care what part of the world you live in rape and fondling a young or old woman is not entertaining! Forget that it's a game for a minute and this was your mother, sister, niece, or daughter and you got the call that she has been victimized. My point is even though it's a game it is to to to real for many woman that had this done to them. I'm not so disgusted right now at the woman who said she found nothing wrong with this game....what planet does she live on?! I find it sad that in order to sell games, books, music, etc.... we have to use sex as the selling point, I cannot believe society can sink lower and lower with each passing day.
As children we all saw that Barbie always had the best accessories and the Christy doll was always funny lookin' so guess what...when you don't have an accurate portrayal of "black beauty" many tend to want to be someone they are not. It’s almost like beauty has to be taught instead on witnessing it firsthand because we see who is always on the cover on different magazines and in once in a blue moon we would see a beautiful woman of color on one of those magazines. Also, when we get older this feeling doesn’t go away because of the many comments we may endure for example “You’re cute for a dark skinned girl” or “She’s a lot prettier than you because she’s light skinned”.
Despite all the comments on being shocked about the video, I for one was not. As a woman of color I could really see myself picking the white doll because the media portrays being fair skinned, having straight hair, and having light eyes is beautiful. Like seriously??? We all saw when Donnie typed in “beauty” in google images and what came up, so unfortunately this is what is being portrayed to today's youth. As sad as it is we have to do more than say "Black is Beautiful" because according to outside sources this conflicts with this statement. As a child my parents always told me I was beautiful don't get me wrong I know for a FACT that I am fabulous....but going to an elementary school that was predominately white tend to have an effect on you it gives you this longing to be like the other girls.
I found that ignorant white people will just either have the running joke with their other ignorant friends but when around a person of color they will never say anything disrespectful to them out of fear of either getting knocked the hell out or being painted as a racist. People of color I see just don't do that if they don't like you best believe they are not afraid to tell it to your face. The rude text message from the people of color played on the "positive and comical stereotypes" white people have, which most white people pride themselves on or feed into the at the same While the comments for the people of color were being painted as these uneducated, loud, obnoxious people. And guess what none of them would be brave enough to repeat what they text in front of the class so this why Sam chastised the white people more than the people of color.
I believe rude is rude.......BUT when you don't have the guts to tell it to the person face you are just a coward! Ok it's not black people being sensitive...and for the record how do ya'll know it was all the black people being shocked first of all because the question was address to the people of color that means everyone that ISN'T white! So just say it was all the black people because how do you know it over a hundred people in the room! Also, if black people are going to say a rude comment best believe they will say it to your face or loud enough for you to hear it. The only difference was those cowards in the room was hiding behind the fact that it was anonymous and at any given day they would never say that to a person of color!
The administration should be ashamed of themselves! Cancelling prom because “it interfered with schoolwork” Seriously? It’s PROM! As long as you get the money for the tickets on time, the school should have no say so when it comes to who you are taking. Granted there is a dress code they can enforce but choosing someone’s date that is so wrong. It’s the student’s money!!! I think that’s what the administration keeps forgetting; I bet if the student’s put all of their money together they could have a better prom than what the school was going to give them. I hate it when schools act like parents and take things away because if it wasn’t for taxes and the parents letting their children attend that school….There wouldn’t be a prom to cancel because no one would be there! They administration know that they are in the wrong for canceling prom, so they are deciding to hide behind the fact of prom is more of a party and it has the right to be canceled, instead of saying that they oppose of same-sex couples attending prom together. It’s downright childish of them to do something like this! It’s the one night many would remember for the rest of their lives, how dare they take that from them! I feel horrible for the students that have probably been saving their money so they can go to prom. I think it’s disgusting what administration did because it’s not their money….why do they have a say in this matter. If they girl would have taken a guy and then ditched him to be with her girlfriend, would they even care? Come on it’s always that one girl who hates their date and ditches them. But because the girl outright said she wanted to take her girlfriend they believe this is an extreme problem. This is so discriminatory what’s next black girls can’t have dates that are not their race? I swore it was 2010, why is this issue considering the students are the ones footing the bill?
While listening to this discussion it was like they were just talking in circles I believe and nothing was really said. This is soooo ridiculous bad enough that black people are the ones doing this…as a joke no less. Are they that bored? And why is dressing “ghetto” a good theme party it just feed into the stereotype that black people are ghetto and ignorant. This really pissed me off, I really want to know what was going through the heads of these people it’s utterly ridiculous that they would do such a thing! It’s not cool. It’s just stupid. I think the faster people would stop trying to live up to these stereotypes the faster we can get rid of them. I really disagreed with David’s idea of having more African American staff members it’s not because it’s a dumb idea, but it’s really unrealistic. It’s almost impossible to find that many minority staff members that are qualified to do the job efficiently.
