You either voted or abstained in the elections that put leaders in place to make decisions on your behalf. We are a representative form of government. Just as no one asked you to vote on how to balance the state budget, or which roads were going to be built out of state funds.

I don't fear such a vote at all, if that were to happen, so long as hatemongering right wing activists from out of state didn't outspend any other voice 1,000,000 to 1 in spreading their vitriole. There is no majority in the hearts and minds of Iowans.
Mind you before women's suffrage came in and pushed the envelope, putting the women's right to vote to a vote would've prevented women from ever getting the right to vote. Think process! We elect folks to make decisions for us, we are a representative form of government. We also elect our folks to appoint people, such as Supreme Court justices.

The majority did not rule, that's the point. In fact, this is an area, as with a lot of social change, where there ISN'T a clear majority.

The people of Iowa have already rejected Vander Plaats. If he wasn't the puppet of a strong, out-of-state, wing-nut so called "familiy values" organization that literally pumped over a million dollars into Iowa's airwaves, the judges would've been retained as always and no one would be listening to him.

You are right, the only way I'd care if it were taking place in front of my house. Worse crimes are occuring on the same streets and behind closed doors, so it is a matter of priority. Drugs and prostitution are distrinct crimes, and the latter doesn't in and of itself hurt either party.

The language in this article is troubling - "claims" and "she said". At least say "allegedly". The way the story is written downgrades the credibility of the report without ANY evidence for or against the "claim". It takes a lot of guts for victims to report, so let's not perpetuate a double standard about the truthfulness and accuracy of this alleged crime vs. a simple mugging.
