Big Hollywood : Today's Open Thread: #16 'All In the Family'

Interestingly enough, Ronald Reagan won over most of the "Archie Bunker Americans," when he was elected in 1980. After 4 years of what would have been the Mike Stivik choice for President, Jimmuh "the Pious" Carter our parents, our greatest generation, figured it out, giving Reagan back to back victories? Common sense trumped ideology.

Big Government : Will We Finally Put Our Fiscal House in Order? The Budget Debate Will Be Determinative

Making the cuts that are necessary? That's seriously doubtful from my prespective. That would be just too difficult to give a coherant defense and keep on message for "Job 1." So, what is "Job 1?" In the only political science class that I took in college, "Job 1" for the politician was defined as getting re-elected during the next cycle. Let's face it: Congressional Representatives brag about the money they "bring home to their districts," not how much they are going to cut from our future obligations - too few people understand that concept. Because "Job 1" is so important, we rarely get citizen representatives that serve and go home. The only place that works in the armed services. It's time for a constitutional amendment defining TERM LIMITS and retrocatively limiting pay and retirement benefits for all members of Congress.

Big Government : Wednesday Open Thread: Birthday Edition

GOD Bless You, General Lee! Take 1 principalled soldier and put him in a place where he MUST choose the lesser of two evils - Fighting for the country/government he loves or fighting for the friends/family/neighbors he loves. Lee decided that the fovernment overstepped its bounds and he would have to oppose it. Taking the sons of the rag-tagged farmers and frontiersmen that won the Revolutionary War (in the South) some 80 years earlier, Lee gave the war his best shot against an industrialized North. Out gunned, but rarely out smarted, he kept lesser Generals busy for years. Finally defeated, he surrendered with dignity, only to be labelled as a traitor, have his ancestoral home, family name and citizenship removed from him. Many know that Lee lost his citizenship (recently restored 135 years after his death). Fewer know that his ancesteral home Arlington was confiscated to become a National Cemetary. Fewer still remember Lee as a Union General, up to 1861 and a successful soldier in the campaign from Veracruz to Mexico City. And a small number might recognize his father, "Light Horse" Harry Lee as a Revolutionary War hero.

Big Government : Troubled Teens Born in the Classroom

Strange. My oldest is already starting to receive college literature and he's only in the 8th grade! Sheltered rightwing nest? No way! As long as their are Leftwing Do-Gooders who are so sure that our children are not socialized, sheltered, and under educated. They see and understand what is happening around them. Actually, in NC, we must test every single year to advance and eventually graduate. In science classes, we discuss theories of Intelligent Design and Survival of the Fitest. Flunking out of college? It's always possible but less likely with the homeschooled, as they have already learned how to research and study independently. Mental institutions? Nope, they've never gone to or graduated from one.

Big Hollywood : ...And Now a Holiday Message From Evangelical Atheist Ricky Gervais

Gervais is a blatant evangelist for his personal beliefs. I had to get up and leave in the middle of "the Invention of Lying," due to the prosthelytizing and unabashed frontal of the assault on the belief system of religious conservatives. I vote with my pocketbook, so helping Gervais get rich is out of the question. Gervais tries to invoke the "Science seeks the facts" route of reasoning. At one time, scientists sought to understand how the physical world operates. Christians and Jews among the group, glorified GOD with scientific discovery. However, since the advent of Darwinism, science has sought to prove the premise that GOD does not exist. But when you start with an incorrect premise, you'll likely get an incorrect result.

Then there are the others, the RINOs, the "Big Tent" and Country-Club Republicans (the Oilgarchy) that always give the shrill scream that "we have to vote for_____ because _____ will destroy the country." These are the same people that hated Reagan and the "Bible Thumpers." Their beliefs are closer to the "Bitter Clinger" remarks made by Barak Obama than the mainstream of the country. Michael Steel is one of the oligarchy that demands we follow him. I don't think so! The common line among the Oligarchy is that Republicans didn't win the Senate because of the TEA Party. Yet in the House. the TEA Party is given the credit that it's due for routing the liberal Democrats. They've got one more election cycle to decide that we are at least an equal partner in the Republican Party or else we're done with it.

Let's face the truth: There are two Republican Parties. The first party has a belief system. It is conservative in morality, defense, religion, believes in the principle of small government and the principles og government outlined in the Constitution. The membership of this party can be described as "having a spine" and being willing to take a stand on any issue, they know bull$h!+ when they hear it, they hate being lied to, and they won't be led into oblivion by a gutless leader that is willing to give away what our forefathers fought to achieve. These are the people that did not come out to support John McCain (or held their noses and voted because they realized who Barak Obama was and what he intended to do after becoming POTUS with a Democrat Congress!).

Big Government : Environmental Welfare

When discussing GREEN, everyone forgets one of the definitions. As it relates to fruits and vegetables, GREEN means "not ripe," an appropriate description when it's used discussing the ideas that come from an Environmentalist's Fertile Mind. It's not that any of these ideas don't have merit, but the dreams haven't ripened to a point where it makes economic sense to practice them. When these ideas ripen to that point, the ideas are no longer GREEN, but instead STEWARDSHIP (balancing the costs of the idea prom the viewpoints of economics as well as preservation of resources). Call me when these ideas progress from HALF BAKED to READY FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION and we can have a real debate on their merit....

Big Hollywood : 'I Speak Jive': Barbara Billingsly 1915 - 2010

One of my favorite 3 lines from a Hollywood Movie and a great piece of advice is "Chump don't want no help, chump won't get no help." Only Barbara Billingsley could pull that line off with that level of panache. Only two other lines compare: The obvious choice is Sally Field telling Tom Hanks, "Stupid is, as stupid does" in Forrest Gump. The last line is Clint Eastwood's Harry Callahan speaking of Tyne Daley's Inspector Kate Moore character, saying "She wants to play lumberjack, she's going to have to learn to handle her end of the log." All three of these lines are sage advice given from a hardened expert to a rank novice. They are still applicable in life today.

Big Hollywood : 'Forrest Gump': A Look Back at 1994, The Best Year Ever

Forrest Gump may be the last GOOD film that either Tom Hanks and Sally Field made. While Forrest displayed the tenants of conservsatism (perseverance through adversity), the one thing that I really remember was Sally Field's character, Mrs. Gump, giving Forrest the best piece of advice any parent could ever give to their child: "Stupid is as stupid does." It was and is classic wisdom displayed and distilled down to a sound bite. So next time that you see a liberal acting like a fool, don't get stressed out when there's nothing you can do about it. Just remind them and all the people around them that "Stupid is as stupid does."

Big Hollywood : The Error of Rand Paul

If Rand Paul is as smart as any Conservative out in the "real world," he should respond that "Just like all well meaning liberals out in the United States, they don't have to do business with anyone in Arizona." This puts the liberals in a precarious position: Either become hypocrites that believe that it's O.K. to abide by free market rules (and give your business to whom ever you desire) or have themselves forced by a centralized government to do business with a state that they finds morally reprehensible. His only problems are that he needs to be able to (1) connect with the voters on a current issue (Illegal immigration and the Arizona law) and (2) say it with a sound bite that can be understood by the general public.
