Yes your right, you need a wii soft chip ideally! It's just so easy to do it's silly really!!
They released updates quite often, and are always quick to release new updates when Nintendo releases new Wii firmware!

Yes you have to downloaded them either through your own sources or a service such ashttp://www.thewiimodchip.com/MyWiiDownloads

Yes that is another drawback when using any of the physical wii modchip options. The Wii softmod does not suffer from this drawback though, and yes, you can play online freely!

A soft chip is just a piece of software that you install on your nintendo wii. Where as an actual wii modchip requires you to dismantle your console and solder it into place.
