Plenty of teachers have been axed because of budget cuts, and I know law enforcement is suffering in many areas... let's look to those areas and see how effective the government has been...

All schools should be getting stimulus money, but instead, in Arizona, education is being cut. I teach at a charter school, and a while back we had a huge meeting on how we could meet budget next year because our funding is being cut. Come on, we already operate on 60% of what the public schools are given, how much more can you take from us?

How about getting rid of the teacher's union altogether? They really do mess things up. I'm a teacher (non-unionized, thank goodness), and I teach at a charter school. You are correct. The public school teachers are overpaid. However, not all teachers are public school teachers, and not all of us are overpaid. When you work in all the overtime hours (planning, grading, extra curricular supervision, etc.) the teachers at my school make less than babysitters.

I would gladly subscribe to "pay for performance" because I know that there are teachers out there who do the bare minimum and collect while students fail, but I teach in southern AZ, where about 95% of my students are Hispanic, and English Language Learners. Because of the language barriers, unfortunately, a lot of students don't meet standards, and because of their cultural background, school doesn't mean much to them, so they don't care what sort of grades they earn. I consider myself a good teacher, and pay for performance would not give me enough to live on, while it would easily support someone doing a mediocre job somewhere in white suburbia.
