Daily Camera.com: : \'Little Target\' says goodbye in Broomfield - Boulder Daily Camera

Wow, talk about depressing! At midnight they had a team taking down signs and boarding up the site. By 2 this afternoon all signage was down and the only clue it was ever a Target were the shopping carts up by the side of the building. It looks like an abandoned hell hole right as you come into Broomfield. The original old strip mall with the Donut Shop and Ace Hardware was more attractive than what is there now. Way to go Broomfield City Council. No Target, KMart, Nordstroms rack, Great Indoors...there are more and more big box stores that are boarded up and closed. Thank goodness we still have Walmart....NOT!!

Daily Camera.com: : CU tuition hike funded raises for Phil DiStefano, other top administrators - Boulder Daily Camera

When CU gives the same level of education as USC, Stanford, Cal and UCLA, then you can start comparing your salary and tuition to other PAC 12 schools. CU has been in the PAC 12 for a year, what gives with comparing themselves to their scales already?

Daily Camera.com: : BVSD officials defend leadership change at Emerald Elementary - Boulder Daily Camera

Did not say that Title 1 schools are harbors for lazy teachers. Maybe you need to read what was said before you do some knee jerk reply. Furthermore, parental support is just as poor at some "rich white bread "high performing" schools. I have worked at a Title 1 school and as I stated, many of the teachers are absolutely awesome. I don't think being Title 1 or a "rich white bread school" has any impact on the amount of lazy dead weights who are all too happy to cause trouble rather than do the job they are paid to do.

I think it is unfortunate that Emerald did not take full advantage of an excellent teacher turned principal who could still share teaching experience successes/failures coming from a school like Pioneer. He had wonderful experiences to share from teaching at Pioneer. The more you examine the situation, the more likely the cause is a few petulant teachers who decided to make their career causing trouble instead of actually teaching. Hope they get the boot!

What about the faculty? Did Mr. Tanaka expect teachers to step up their game and change some of their stale cirriculum? I suspect that some lazy teachers decided to cause more division among staff rather than actually become innovative, inspiring teachers. Hopefully the district will do a close evaluation of all the teachers and give them the same treatment Mr. Tanaka received. Time to throw the teacher's union out the window and get rid of lead anchor teachers who are twiddling their thumbs waiting to collect retirement benefits. This certainly does not apply to all teachers. Some are outstanding and truly make a difference in children's lives, especially at Emerald. There are excellent mentors and teachers who take the time to really address Title 1 children's needs. It's the bozos who need to go so the school can recover. Hopefully they will get an even tougher principal who will make them tow the line.

Daily Camera.com: : Ex-Broomfield High students sue Travis Masse, BVSD over \'sexual misconduct\' - Boulder Daily Camera

The allegation is that he knowingly placed him at Broomfield High School specifically to coach his son, who was open enrolled at BHS and participated in the wrestling program. If King instructed whoever the powers may be to put Masse at BHS and he obviously knew of his prior offenses, someone needs to answer as to why he (Masse) was hired. This is an obvious breach of hiring practices.

there never have been any answers to the questions...who hired him at BHS and did they know about his previous problems with CU/Monarch and willingly hire him anyway? The Board of Ed for BVSD and whoever else has the authority to investigate refuses to ask or answer these questions. Why? Probably some kind of hush clause for Dr. King and his sweet package from BVSD since his son was open enrolled at BHS specifically to have Masse coach him. Lots of unanswered questions that parents of BHS deserve to get clarification on. I am not accusing Ramsey, but this does need to be addressed.

Daily Camera.com: : Boulder Valley students have more access to advanced classes than students statewide - Boulder Daily

Those "gate keeper" barriers help students get prepared over the summer for the course load and the amount of work necessary to excel in the class. If the cost of a book is the problem, then find alternatives for access to the book, don't ditch the requirement. BVSD reading requirements are already pathetic compared to eastern schools with more required reading. This shows up when students take the SAT/ACT and are not exposed to the higher level vocabulary questions on these tests. Reading helps them gain the exposure to higher levels of subjects. Don't dumb down the requirements under the cloak of making them more accessible to economically challenged students. How about you give up some of those flat screened tvs in lobbies and put that money towards supplies of books???

Daily Camera.com: : Jury foreman in Travis Masse trial criticizes Boulder Valley and Broomfield High for lax oversight -

It is obvious that the Board of Education and BVSD are not going to do any investigating. Their number one priority is to cover this up and hope it all goes away. Who or what organization does the investigating when they refuse to move forward with this? The police? CDE? It is time to get others involved in this because nothing will happen otherwise. Shame on the members of the Board of Education for not initiating an investigation of who hired Masse. You have to wonder how many other times this type of thing has happened.

There needs to be an investigation of who hired Masse at BHS, and if they were aware that he had a prior history. Masse acted stupidly, and has been found guilty, but I firmly believe that someone needs to directly answer the question...did he get hired by BVSD and BHS with them knowing, but ignoring, his past. If that is the case, they are guilty for having him in that "position of trust" in the first place. Come on Daily Camera...time to ask.

What kind of time frame did you experience between when you saw him, reported his questionable actions and he was arrested. If I recall, he resigned in Feb, was arrested in May 2010. Who did you report this to and what part did they play in having him arrested. Did you call the police or report it to someone at BHS? Bottom line question...did you tell someone at BVSD and did they sit on it for awhile or act immediately?

If that is true, the principal should answer for the hiring. King was at the district, and could have very easily leaned on the principal to hire him. Whatever the circumstances, someone needs to answer the allegations. Did he have a past? Who is responsible for hiring him and did they knowlingly hire him in spite of a checkered past?

There needs to be an investigation of BVSD and King's part in this ASAP. To hire someone with a known past is obscene. BVSD should be held accountable for putting him at BHS in the first place.

Daily Camera.com: : Boulder Valley picks three superintendent candidates - Boulder Daily Camera

BVSD is continually being dumbed down. I would like to see a candidate say something like this... I have taken the average student, challenged them more and raised their GPA legitimately without making the class easier and dropping some of the content. There is too much focus on raising failing students and not enough on challenging most students. What ever happened to setting the bar high and letting the kids work towards being better. The bar is so low now they are all tripping over it and zoning out in class...what a waste. Teachers need someone who is going to encourage them to teach...not babysit.

It is time for BVSD to get someone new. New ideas, new perspective, new relationships. The district does not need someone who is too familiar with how things have always been...they tend to keep going down that same road in the end.

agreed! I know at my child's elementary school, we had a mom who "volunteered" then told everyone how poorly kids did compared to her super kid, who was on free reduced lunch(don't know exactly how she found that out from papers) etc. No parent should ever see or grade student papers. Bad idea!

I would think late start planning would be totally ineffective at the high school level as well. You do not have a group of teachers doing the same instruction. The beauty of high school allows different levels of instruction. What good is it for the one AP Language and Composition instructor to meet with the remedial LA instructor. They basically teach totally different cirriculums, as does the biology teacher and the chem teacher etc. This is insane, especially at high school and even middle school.

Daily Camera.com: : Boulder Valley sticking with healthy lunches, may raise prices - Boulder Daily Camera

Mr. Reed says, "The kids are eating...if they did not like it they would stop." How many of those kids that are still eating are on free/reduced lunch and this is the only option for them? I am glad they are providing breakfast and lunch for those who are in need, but to do a fair economic evaluation the district needs to look at how many students are paying full price for these meals. My guess would be not too many. As others have said, it is much cheaper to continue sending healthy lunches made at home. That is what we will keep doing. Also, don't count on high school students eating these lunches. Most of them leave campus anyway.
