Eh, overreact much? You can nitpick this all you want, yes we are potentially losing 2 players (I doubt Figueroa gets picked up though, we was on waivers last year also and did not get picked up). However I did not exactly see any ideas on what the proper roster management technique would have been here...

You can place Pelfrey on the DL, but then 10 days later Figueroa has to be DFA'd anyways. We can keep O'day this way, but Pelfrey loses 2 more starts, I don't think the mets management wanted that.

You can send down Parnell and bring him up 10 days later for Figueroa, however the fact that the roster moves were made the way they were made tells me that mets management prefers to have a lefty in that final bullpen slot. Oh yea, and Figueroa is still DFA'd 10 days later using this technique.

Besides, the player that was going to get cut once Redding is activated is O'Day. For all intents and purposes, we were probably going to lose him anyways. We can also keep Figeroa up as the last man in the bullpen, but once again the fact that we did not tells me the mets prefer to have a lefty in that final slot.

With this win and Johan going tommorow, hopefully we can get some sort of a winning streak going here.

You forgot Swisher will also pitch 15 scoreless innings :)

In 22 innings on the season, we have allowed 6 ER, that translates into a 2.45 ERA. Yes every inning the pen is allowing someone to get on base, but that is simply baseball. The best pitchers in the league allow one baserunner per inning. Yes the WHIP for our bullpen is a bit high right now, and it seems as though they are allowing too many baserunners, but they are not allowing those runs to come in unlike last season, and I don't expect the pen to continue having such a high WHIP.

Agreed completely. We have lost 3 1-run games so far, which stinks but the team has looked good. The bullpen is solid, we have been getting runs in the late innings unlike last year, and in every game we have come back late to tie or get it close. Only thing that hasn't performed as well as expected is the defense (7 errors leading the NL), but to me that is simply a bad stretch and not something I expect to continue on throughout the year.

Overreacting early in the year is really foolish. A good example is castillo a few days ago. Batting .100 and everyone ready to release him, 2 days later hes batting .380 and has all-star stats. Lets be patient fellas

Castillo batting .357 now. Still want to release him?

We all gotta be patient, just because he has a 1 for 10 stretch does not mean he is done. Even the best hitters will have slumps, lets just not boo him (And potentially cause him to start pressing and struggle further) whenever he has a bad stretch.

Look at all the effects this move has.

1. We replace Marlon Anderson with Sheffield (Win for the mets). Sheffield is much much more productive than anderson. Even in his worst year last year I would take sheffield over anderson 100 times out of 100.
2. If Sheffield causes problems, we release him and call up Nick Evans or Kielty, so now instead of having marlon anderson on the roster just because we owe him 1.1 mill, we have a better player in Evans or Kielty (Win for the mets)

The only concern is if Minaya is gunshy on releasing him if he causes a problem, but you cannot blame that on signing sheffield in the first place. Signing him is a great move, not releasing him if he causes problems would be a bad move (This does not make signing him a bad move).

The only thing I hope is that Marlon Anderson is the one getting cut and not Jeremy Reed getting sent down.

As I mentioned in the previous thread, Sheffield is a huge upgrade over Marlon Anderson. In every category except probably avg (And even that is a tossup), sheffield will outproduce anderson.

As long as he is willing to platoon and expect a role where he will get close to 300 AB's, this is a great roster upgrade move.

I think people forgot how horrible Marlon Anderson was last year. Sheffield batted .225 last year, but he was way more productive than Anderson.

Also Sheffields BABIP was in the .230 range last year, which is absolutely unsustainable. This means he is in for a bounceback in AVG to around the .250-.260 range. Combine his right handedness and a way better OBP and more power compared to anderson, and I think this is a great move in terms of roster-improvement. Sheffield is an obvious upgrade over marlon anderson.

If sheffield will accept a role where he will get about 300 AB's on the season, this should be done.
