Mid-Valley Sports : Hampton: Beavers lose to Seattle again

Only one game, but these games need to be wins if you have post-season aspirations. Lots of poor decisions with the ball when they had the lead. Tough to see an opposing freshmen go for 30 while the Beav newcomers did not have any impact last night. It would also be interesting to hear what play Coach diagramed at the end because I doubt it was to have Calvin dribble for five seconds and get the ball stripped. It would have been nice to see a set play and at least a shot attempt.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: WSU fallout

The Cougs pretty much dominated the Beavs the same way that TCU did in the first game of the season minus James Rodgers in the special team game. To me it is not that complicated, you have to be able to stop the run and run the ball yourself to consistently win games. The Beavs have done that exactly one time this year against Cal, so 4-5 is about what you would expect (maybe even a little better when you look at the year to date stats).

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: UCLA postgame

Yeah,it seemed like everyone kind of blew off Kevin Riley getting injured as no big deal in the Cal game including the media. The victory was apparently Fools Gold as both sides of the ball showed major regression against UCLA. it will be interesting to see the ramifications of a 5-7 season after being in the Rose Bowl mix for two years in a row and the start slow, finish strong trend ending.

It may have been a homer clock at the end, but the Beavs were damn lucky to be tied anyway with Forbath missing his two previous attempts. Also, I would love to know why the secondary was not protecting the sideline given the game situation on that last play? My guess is Banker had them in a prevent thinking that Chow was going for a Hail Mary or maybe the defense was not thinking at all(fairly typical of this year). Quick 10 yard out executed flawlessly by a backup QB, best place kicker in the nation, end of story.

NCAA has waved the rule in the past. I believe North Texas won the Sun Belt with a 5-6 record a few years back and got to play in whatever bowl game was affiliated with their conference.

Banker also has a quote out there today something like "we don't seem that bad" when asked about his defense being ranked 119th out of 120 teams. Now with Robertson's quote there seems to be either shell shock or denial going on with the D!

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Cal presser

This is the first season in a long time where I think the Beavers are actually a little short in talent at certain positions. After six games, if it was just execution than I would think those not executing would be sitting. The defense is really struggling against all oppositon and I don't see a lot of answers. Look for the occassional key turnover and hope the offense can outscore the opposition.

Cliff, I saw some stuff on a Cal blog that the game IS going to be televised on Fox College Sports at 12:30 pm. Are you able to verify? Kind of an obscure channel, but available on DirecTV as part of the Sports Pak. Maybe sports bars will pick it up.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Washington fallout

If the talent is truly there then I think it is natural for the fans to want to see the team reach the next level just like the Ducks have done. Riley and company do need to break through at some point soon or risk becoming the Buffalo Bills of the P-10. Maybe the restlessness is the feeling that the Riley era may have peaked. This season is a tough one to judge becasue of the strength of schedule. I think next season will have sky high expectations and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Wow, your comparisons put it in to perspective. Those are really bad teams with East Carolina probably being the exception (they upset NC St on Saturday). So far the secondary seems to have a nose for the football or it could be even worse. Unfortunately, those numbers remind me of Beaver teams of the 1980-1990 decade! I did not include the 90s because even Pettibone had a couple of defenses that played with their hair on fire. I hope this gets corrected, but after six games you start to wonder if there is a talent gap this year.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: BSU player suspended

Seems like it speaks volumes that Peterson challenged the full game suspension for Venable against the stellar competiton that NMSU will provide. Come on, the NCAA has been harping on leading with the helmet for two years now, but some teams do not seem to be getting the message. I guess controlling his players gets in the way of their BCS quest. Suddenly, I have become a big Nevada Wolfpack fan. That would be sweet irony if Nevada ends up running the table instead of BSU.

I don't care whether it was intentional or not....you cannot lead with your helmet. It was discussed with every D-1 team before the season began. Apparently, that was a low priority for Coach Petersen and his "BCS" quest. I would love to see some suspensions and would also love to see Nevada put an end to the BSU BCS BS!

Wow, tough conference record....do not see the Beavers/1962 Mets getting in with an 11-114 record (see typo above)! Seriously, 30 wins has to be a strong benchmark for a team with such a solid RPI. I would think one more win locks it up, but who knows for sure. After that, not sure how far they can go without Romero.

He must have a real sense of urgency in needing to support his family now. It is not like the Navy will not still be there in two years. Lots of Beaver linebackers have received long looks from the NFL and with two years still to develop who knows how that could have played out. Not to mention a college degree certainly holds value for long term personal economics. Anyway, a very honorable choice no matter the cirmustances.

Brooks, thanks for the update on Serna, but kind of weird that they used a photo of what looks like him getting a punt blocked to announce his resigning!? I thought I read somewhere that he didn't even punt this year. Glad he improved. I hope the Bombers do better next year and make Bernard a bigger part of the offense.
