Thank you for the info. what I did was to use a different computer -> my laptop and I used the same version of RedSnow that I used on the previous (office) computer and it worked! I guess there is something in my office machine that has gone haywire or is preventing RedSnow to jailbreak the iPad 2g I was working on. Strange. Thanks again to all!

Yes I am running as an Administrator. I also tried pointing it to fw iPod2,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw after reading somewhere that I should point it to the 4.1 and not to the 4.2.1 but still get same error.

I've got an iPod touch 2G updated to OS4.2.1 and the model number is MB531ZP. When I try to jb with RedSnow on WinXP, I get an error message (after selecting firmware iPod2,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw and clicking Next), "Unexpected error during preparation". What is wrong and how can I jb this iPod? The model begins with an MB and NOT MC so jailbreaking should work. I've tried earlier versions of RedSnow but still the same message. Please help!

Since you guys are talking about GPS, I was just wondering what is a good GPS app (from Cydia or the app store) that is good and free for the 3g? I tried to look for Navigon (or MotionX) in Cydia but couldn't find that listed.

For some reason Cydia is breaking the original Apple TV-out feature. I tried installing "TVOut2 Mirror TV Out" (or another option is "Resupported4") and got the video back, but it looks choppy and especially from iTunes it's quite bad as the quality is far lower than the original Apple TV-out feature. If only there was a way that Cydia could be implemented without losing the original Apple TV-out feature. Cheers!

I observed that my 3g jb updated to iOS 4.2.1 with bb 06.15 appears not to be able to play video on my TV with my ProDock or Apple TV out cables. When my 3g used to be on 3.1.3 with the lower bb everything was working fine but now after the upgrade and the jb I no longer get the video. The audio appears to be ok though. I am using composite video cable for my video. Does this have anything to do with the upgrade? Could the dev team include this in their fix? Please? Thanks a zillion in advance.

btw just for your added info, i recently had my 3g battery checked by a technician and he said that the batt is in perfect condition and still very good. So this means that the power drop is NOT caused by a bad battery. It is something else which really needs to be investigated more. Just added info.

Yes I agree that the drop from a 100% to 5% is such a massive power drop. Sometimes it evens drop to as low as 2% which is really surprising because the 3g isn't being used and I even placed the 3g screen on lock/standby mode which shouldn't use up so much power. Really strange. Although if I switch off the phone and it is plugged in there appears to be no battery drain and the batt is charging/charged up. Looks like that the 3g is still suffering from the battery problem despite the hacks made with ultrasnow and SAM. Any ideas Dev Team???

I just plugged my 3g to my laptop and verified that it is charging. I can see the power plug icon appearing in the battery icon indicating that it is indeed charging. So my iTunes is ok. I guess it must be the sleep/hibernate thing but I'll observe that.

redsn0w 0.9.6beta5. update to 4.2.1 and then when you launch redsnow select the stock iOS firmware 4.2.1 that was downloaded. follow the instructions in simplified route#1 above. after you are updated to 4.2.1 with new baseband and with ultrasnow installed you can install SAM via cydia (see instructions in update#6) go back to redsnow then select deactivate only (see instructions in update#6)

I didn't know if laptops go to sleep/hibernate mode then no power flows out of the usb port at all .... even if my laptop is plugged all night into the main power adapter? Thanks. I'll observe this if this is the culprit.

I was able to update my 3g to 4.2.1 with BB 06.15.00. JB it successfully with the latest redsnow on WinXP and installed Ultrasnow and successfully installed and updated with SAM. Isn't this supposed to improve the battery condition? How come I observed when I fully charged my iphone with the power adapter and then with the same usb cable I hooked up to my computer. It still says 100% and I left it overnight but the following morning the battery is way, way down to almost 5%. I mean the battery should still remain charged since it has been plugged to my laptop the whole night. Why is the phone discharged? It is such a hassle to see that the 3g has to be recharged all over again with the power supply. I tried different USB port and still the same behavior. There should be no difference if plugged to main power adapter or to the usb port of my laptop for charging. Why then does my 3g not get charged when hooked to my PC? Really strange. Or is the power from the USB port not enough compared as with that of the main charger? Any ideas? In short, I still experience the battery problem despite having updated my iphone successfully following the steps outlined by the DevTeam,. Thanks.

Help! How can I update my 3g iOS from 4.1 to 4.2.1? My BB is at BB 6.15. I am unable to restore because iTunes says that my restore files are too new. Initially my phone was on 4.2.1 but it crashed on me so I restored it back but it only restores back to 4.1. I need to get this back to 4.2.1 so I can get my data back. Please help! I'm on Windows.

I got a 3G 16g, was able to jailbreak it with redsn0w, unlock it with ultrasn0w. I restored all my contacts, apple apps and what-nots with my iTunes and I got them all back. I restored with PkgBackup to get back all my previous Cydia apps and all is fine. I've doubled check for OS4.x compatibility and deleted the ones that were not updated yet. My phone appears to be working fine. Just a bit sluggish and the battery problem acts up occasionally. However, I am perplexxed at why everytime I go into my contacts and select a number to dial, the screen goes blank. I can hear the phone dialling and making a connection but I do not get the pop-up screen that shows the speaker, keypad, and other items for that window. Even after the call has been made the screen remains black and have to hold down power button for what seems like ages to kick my phone back and then I get an error message screen that says springboard has crashed and the buttons cancel and reboot. Please help. I need that screen specially if I dial into my phone banking where I need to press keys for my responses to the voice prompts. Help! Although if I do a manual dial, everything works fine. It is only when I go into contacts and then select a number to autodial when this happens. This has never happened before and I am at a dead-end on this. Please, please I need help. I've already re-jailbreak this phone thrice and even tried after a fresh jailbreak but the same thing happens so I'm sure it isn't any of the packages restored via PkgBkup or thru iTunes. Must be something in the Jailbreak or firmware maybe. I don't know .... Thanks to dev-team for your great work but there are still a few kinks like this that needs to be ironed out.

Thank you so much for this. I successfully updated and unlocked my iPhone3g BUT I am encountering a problem when I dial a number from my contacts address book. The screen goes blank when I select a number from my contacts and the pop-up screen that displays the other options like the keypad, speakerphone, etc does not appear. I can hear the phone dialing and making a connection but I am unable to switch to speakerphone or use the keypad which is very important specially if I have to dial into my bank account or other services which require my manual input via the keypad. Even after the call has ended the screen stays blank and I have to hold down the power key for a long time just to get my screen back and when I do get it back, an error screen appears saying that SpringBoard has crashed and that MobileSubstrate protected my iphone from it. I have to do a reboot to get my phone back in normal mode. However if I dial a number directly using the keypad everything appears well. It is only when I select a number from my contacts when this problem occurs. Help, this is getting annoying and I am unable to dial without crashing my iphone whenever I select a number from my contacts list.

Have you tried to "reformat" it using iTunes as a new phone? That might fix it but of course, you'll lose all your data. Maybe, you can then try to restore it afterwards.
