I agree with you on the ceremonial mayor negotiating, but when hiring a CEO in the private sector everything is negotiable. Negotiating a contract for this level of position is very appropriate. Not everyone can be a city manager. When you're hiring the masses for a position with lower qualifications required, you can set the salary and benefits, but when you're hiring a very specialized position, there are more items to be discussed to make everyone happy.

It was probably the KIMA moderator. I've noticed that anything critical of KIMA or the City of Yakima get a thumbs down rather quick.

Good call Union Gap. Good way to stretch the budget and seeing the chief out and about is always a good thing.

KIMA, you guys really need to step your game up on the basics of journalism. Email has spell check, yet your web publishing software doesn't?? Misspelling headlines and not proof reading articles is just bad form. You guys posted this at 5:18 last night and you can't go in and fix it?? That's just lazy! Do some damage control and take pride in yourselves!

social security is an entitlement, not a job. you pay in, you get out...for now until it's bankrupt. but all jobs have some sort of performance review system. i don't work in the business of emergency services, so i'm not qualified to propose what the exact metrics would be for such a system. but ask any cop or firefighter, and they'll be able to tell you who does their job well and who sucks. why should the people who suck be guaranteed future wage increases? just because they pay dues to a union?

you're right, they do it to stay competitive with other employers...but you don't need a union to get competitive wages. what about pay for performance? do your job, stay out of trouble, meet performance metrics, and get pay raises. through the union system, the above average performers are giving their pay increases to below average performers by giving "across the board" increases.

i understand inflation and agree that the city needs to pay well in order to maintain good employees, but i don't like the union system in guaranteeing future wage increases for all employees when some sub-par employees may benefit from it.

how many non-union employees in this city work on 0% contracts and have to rely on merit raises and the health of a business instead of guaranteed increases?? be big boys and don't cry about the lack of a contract.
