Thanks for the background story and update. My parents, also former alcoholics, became friends with Pappy in Fresno, CA where he resided during my childhood. If I recall, it was my 10th birthday and he and his wife Jo invited us over for a swim. I wish I could have understood the enormity of his military accomplishments and the real danger he survived. Alas, I was more interested in his elegant swimming pool with fish statuary that squirted water into the pool. (None of my friends had those!) I'm sure I thanked Maj. Boyington for his hospitality back in 1976, but now I can posthumously thank Maj. Boyington for his heroic service as well.
RIP Sunnyside Drive In in Fresno !! My now husband had been grounded from using a car, but he had already asked me out so he asked his neighbor to drive and all "3"of us went to the drive in. At least we had good company because the movie was a stinker - The World According to Garp 1982? So glad Robin Williams improved with age.

Uncle Carl - your sister and her family are America's real producers. They also run real homes and budgets and seek value (not notoriety) from their investments of money and time. The "audacity" that America's D.C. leadership thinks they know better about the rules of a healthy economy is a joke to her, thus the popularity of Palin. We will look forward to the film you praised, but keep in mind that the 90% are distributed throughout EVERY state. Even NY and CA. They had just been too busy producing to realize how much damage a STUPID 10% can inflict in a relatively short amount of time. Hope you plan to visit your sister and her brood regularly for reality retreats. It will continue to inform you and your career, presently lived amongst the hedonists.

We live near Dallas so I take some pleasure in knowing our Protector President is practically a neighbor. Not to exclude Mrs. Bush in this conversation, their genuine class and knowledge of protocol shines as they go on writing their next chapters in life, quietly, even though there are sssooooooo many things that they could say about the past year. My husband and I just celebrated our anniversary yesterday, January 20th, and we recalled the way we spent last year's "Historic" Inaguration Day: standing among thousands for hours in the downtown Midland, TX waiting to welcome the Bushes home and applaud their service to our country. It's not that we want to say "I told you so," it's just that one year out, we are so happy we changed our original plans and spent that twilight evening with friends: President and Mrs. Bush.
She just wants everyone to think it's see through. She's the Madonna of her world.
