This is aimed at helping people who *don't* necessarily already have their own audience or voice within the LI community but who have or want to create a valuable resource and would like to spread the word about it. This is a way of ensuring that we can help use the platforms we've already created to promote the best of these without compromising our own brand.
When somebody chooses to use the term "LIP" or "location independent" in their brand/domain name, to some people this may imply some sort of association with our site/company - we want to ensure that it's clear to our audience & readership where this relationship does actually exist - and where it does, we'll aim to promote & support the resources as much as possible.
The people you've mentioned already have their own audiences/platforms and obviously don't need our "thumbs up" to continue doing the great jobs they're doing.

The only alternative that I can come up with is to go for the iPod Touch instead...and when you're overseas just connect wirelessly. It does pretty much what the iPhone does except of course the phone functions but if you're using wireless to connect, you can always the use the Skype app.
For me, I think that'll be the best way to go since I'd probably be connecting wirelessly overseas anyway, in which case I don't need the phone/GSM functionality.

The Nike's would probably stand up to light hiking (we both climbed up Lion's Head in Cape Town in ours) - although they're not the most structured/supportive of shoes so that's something to consider for hiking over rougher terrain.

Not tried the mi-fi yet - that's from Verizon in the US right? Would be interested to know how/if it travels too with roaming charges etc. Anyone else tried it?

These days we think carefully about what value we get from the money we spend - as I *hate* flying (and yes, I know that *is* ironic coming from a nomadic LIP!!!) - if I had the money to spend on 1st class flights, I probably would. That's why we sometimes choose to fly business class because the additional room, ability to do some work on the laptop, the lounge access etc. etc. makes it valuable enough for us to spend the extra to do so. First class might be a little extravagant but hey, we all need a bit of extravagance in our lives sometimes :)
