Good for Farenthold, but the 11th & 20th districts in CA are in the process of being stolen. I’ve followed the 11th for the past 25 years and I’ve never seen anything like what happened in the McNerney Harmer race. Harmer had a solid 3% lead until late reporting precincts (as in 3-4am) started showing a “trend” for McNerney - same situation with Costa in the 20th. Hordes of unverifiable provisional ballots, mysteriously late precincts from out county (almost always voting conservative) and final results contrary to every poll from both the left and right. It stinks.

One of the greatest money pits not identified in this article is something both teachers unions and their critics always seem to ignore: the army of support staff, administrators and consultants sucking the system dry. In California we have janitors& lunch-ladies earning 35-60K plus benefits, endless departments filled with thousands of “specialists”, highly paid consultants roaming the halls & many administrators who draw higher salaries than the President. Federal funding (categorical funding) is a disaster, it’s madness.

Fair enough rebuttal. From what I know, England and France peacefully and gradually converted to Christianity under the religious auspices of the Roman Empire - Germany is a much longer story - the others you mentioned had far more to do with the empire building of individual nations than religion. Of course, religion played a valuable propaganda role (God is with us etc.), but the command to slaughter nonbelievers does not exist in any major religion other than Islam. Even “moderate” Muslims claim infidel occupation of Muslim lands was the reason behind Sept. 11. But hey, if you want to defend Islam and think you’re enlightened, you’re free to do so.

We have forgotten that all of the lands from North Africa to Kosovo are “occupied” territories. Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Macedonia, Iran, etc… The Christians, Zoroastrians & Jews that inhabited these areas have been systematically persecuted to the point were only tiny and frightened populations remain. The left loves to throw around terms like imperialism and ethnocide - while the biggest exterminator of cultures for the past millennium has been Islam. Tolerance by any Western standard does not exist in any Muslim country.

Amazing the POTUS has time to publicly condemn Jones’s threat to burn the Koran and couldn’t find it within himself to question the Cordoba Mosque project. Both actions are undoubtedly controversial and covered by the 1st amendment, but the proposed Cordoba Mosque takes the cake for pure vileness - Cordoba, the lost mosque of Andalusia that Osama Bin Laden spoke of after Sept. 11. They didn’t call it the “Cordoba Project” because it sounded pretty! The press & prez need to spend a few days at the library.

Perhaps she had an epiphany? I think this is just a matter of Libertarians basking in their newfound political relevance. Most tea party candidates and those running as constitutionalists or “true conservatives” are more or less, libertarians. I think what we’re seeing is a battle for the ideological soul of the Republican Party - in the end we may see a powerful libertarian wing of the RNC & the Libertarian Party may become redundant ( already has?). If this happens, we’re going to see a lot of arguing about economic & philosophical ideas - a good thing for a healthy republic.

There is hope. The “academics” Sowel speaks of are not what they used to be. The graduates educated in places like Berkeley with degrees outside of the hard sciences can’t write, they’ve read very little (outside of required reading lists) & generally have a hard time finding themselves on a map. Look at the non-fiction bestseller lists over the past decade and it becomes painfully clear that the left has already lost the brain war. Journalism is a great example: 50 years ago editors wanted to see real degrees in history or literature before hiring a reporter, now it’s degrees in “journalism”, whatever that is.
