Kevin, you're right. Blaming Cronkite for America losing the Vietnam War is bunk. He wasn't the only one questioning the official line that victory was just around the corner. The trouble was that generals are always fighting the last war. Of course that meant Westmoreland and LBJ, both of the WWII generation, looked at the stats and figured that they could win the war of attrition like they had against Hitler and Hirohito. Plus, unlike WWII, this was not a "just war" against tyrants and aggressors, but rather a geopolitical conflict within the context of the Cold War.

Good catch Gene Rayburn. I thought The New York Times didn't make those kind of mistakes. Oh well, I guess that's waht staff cutbacks will do to your credibility
