Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Arizona fallout

"And something we continually stress to our booth officials is there must be indisputable video evidence to overturn a call. Sometimes, we spent far too long looking to reverse the call. And we're asked, 'If you spend two minutes debating a call then how can it be indisputable if you reverse it?' That quote just about says it all about the TD pass James caught in the back of the end zone. How does a booth official reverse an on-field call after taking that long to come up with "indisputable video evidence?" The helmet problem seems to be somewhat universal. I'm assuming there has been some kind of design change that wasn't properly researched. There seem to be helmets lying around in just about every game I watch.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Talking offense

Did anyone hear that Boise State's Venable was suspended for a whole half against New Mexico State? The WAC Commisioner said Venable should have been flagged for a flagrant foul and ejected from the game. He announced a one-game suspension, which was appealed by Boise State, resulting in a half-game suspension by decision of the WAC *un*sportsmanship committee. Just another license for this kind of behavior. No wonder he does the same thing over and over.

"First off, my view of the hit is it was inadvertent. Rodgers tried to block low and Venable went low to take on the block." Please Cliff, watch the YouTube clip above from 1:29 t0 1:31 and tell me it was inadvertent. What is your definition of blocking low? James was simply in a high crouch, preparing for contact, when Venable put his head down and "speared" him plain and simple.

Cliff, It is the Athletic Department. It's all about having the correct venue to be able to audio & video record without the unbelievable background noise. The audio is by far the main culprit.

As Beaverheart said, "Just a little knowledge of audio equipment and we could hear what they are saying." Either a different mike set-up or an isolated interview spot, such as all pro sports use for post game interviews, would work. Anyone ever hear of a camera tripod, or something set up, as in a designated interview spot. With all due respect, keep the MTV stuff. I'm more interested in at least a minimum of professionalism. I'm not trying to be personally critical, but I believe such should be expected from the Athletic Department.

Even though a jury unanimously found Mr. Johnson to be innocent on all three charges, there remains a yet-to-be-determined justice for all that goes along with any accusation. How does a wrongfully-accused person regain their reputation, their lost time and expenses to defend themselves, and their loss of business over a period of time? Everyone hears about the charges, but almost no one hears that the charges were untrue. Ask anyone who is charged with, and found innocent of any crime. They are going to live a changed life simply because of the charges themselves. Hopefully, Ms. Volm, the Portland police, and the Portland DA's office will be made to suffer some of the consequences of their own criminal actions!!! LOOKS LIKE MAYBE SOME OF IT IS TAKING PLACE NOW!

So, now we have Ms. Volm, the Portland Police Bureau, and the Portland DA's office who were all derelict in their duties. Ms. Volm filed a false Police report, and completely perjured herself in attempting to cover up her own outrageous behavior. The Portland police officers failed to take action on Mr. Johnson's citizen's arrest request. The Portland DA's office likewise failed to act on the citizen's arrest request, and proceeded to bring a charge against Mr. Johnson just because a city employee was "allegedly" victimized.
It appears the Portland Police quickly determined that a city employee, such as Ms. Volm, could hardly be guilty of anything. That must mean that the limo driver is guilty of something. (never mind his attempt to inform them that he was in the process of making a citizen's arrest, and their obligation to process that) After this little fiasco was over, Mr. Johnson was charged by the DA with menacing, harassment, and disorderly conduct (because his vehicle was in the intersection, and the Police officers would not allow him to move it). In the end however, justice did prevail. On March 31, 2009, a jury unanimously found Mr. Johnson to be innocent of all three charges. As a diligent investigator discovered, there were other witnesses to the events who completely refuted Ms. Volm's testimony about the incident, testifying that they had seen her get off the moped and violently kick the side of the limo.
I'm sure Mr. Johnson was just a little ticked at someone pounding their fist on the side of his expensive vehicle, so I'm not too surprised that Ms. Volm got yelled at. Now, what was that headline about "Limo Rage?" Perhaps it might have been more correctly worded "Moped Rage," or “City Employee Rage." Think about it. How might you have responded? Mr. Johnson did push Ms. Volm, on her moped, ahead in the right adjoining lane, and then went back to his limo. When the light turned green, he began pulling forward to make a left turn. At that point he checked his passenger-side rear view mirror, and was astonished to see Ms. Volm, on foot, run up to his limo and violently kick the right-rear area of the limo. Mr. Johnson then jumped out of his vehicle and yelled at Ms. Volm that he was placing her under citizen's arrest, which is his right under the circumstances. Ms Volm then extended her arm toward Mr. Johnson, Mr. Johnson took hold of her wrist, and Ms. Volm conveniently just sat down, as though she had been pushed down. He also yelled, "If you kick my vehicle again, I'll punch you in the nose." (continued below)

Like the ex-neighbor's post, this is not a unique story about Mary Volm. Back in July of 2008, Mary Volm was involved in a traffic-related dipute. the story is linked in a previous post above. My comments on the story follow: Wow! What a story! The big problem with the story is that it is all about what Mary Volm "alleges." In fact, Mary Volm got caught with her hand and her foot in the cookie jar. It's really a shame when a so-called "News"paper bases a story what a single city employee "alleges" and what a "witness" thought was taking place. The truth of the matter is, that when Mr. Johnson's limo began to back up (it was not blocking the intersection, but had crossed the crosswalk), Ms. Volm's moped was next to, on the right side of, and not behind, the limo. At that point Ms. Volm began pounding her fist on the side of the limo. When Mr. Johnson went back to see what was going on, Ms. Volm said something to the effect, "You're one of those Town Car drivers, aren't you? I'm going to see to it that you never drive in Portland again". (continued below)

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Cal postgame

Did anyone get a clear look at the replay of the defensive interference call in the 2nd quarter? It sure appeared to me that the defender merely had the receiver screened from the ball, and that the receiver grabbed the defender in an attempt to get back to the ball. If the call had been offensive interference, the Beavs would have thwarted Cal's drive, and would have potentially shut out the Cal offense (and would have avoided the Best accident). I wish such plays could be objectively reviewed in the booth.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Stanford postgame

There was a play, I believe in the 4th quarter, when a Stanford pass was ruled complete, but which TV replays appeared to show the ball dropping to the ground before the receiver fell on the ball. I couldn't understand why there was no review of the play. Even the commentators thought it looked like an incomplete pass. Maybe the Beaver bench was screened off, but there should have definitely been an official review. At any rate, it kept a Stanford scoring drive going, instead of potentially killing the drive.
