I've had ribs broken by an out of control girl going downhill on a bike, and I've been in two car accidents caused by people driving into my car. Oh, and a car got me while walking through a parking lot when I was 16. I also was hit by a car on a bike when I was 19, so I've kind of run the whole route. People just are not good at paying attention, so it pays off to just assume everyone might accidentally kill you. It may sound paranoid, but if I walk up/drive up/bike up to an intersection, I make sure everyone around me sees me before I assume they'll stop. The form of transportation only matters as much as to how likely it is to make you a meat crayon on the road. Otherwise, it's good to try to avoid being hit by anything heavier and faster than you.
