My greatest fear at the moment is that the Tea parties will come to feel that the Republican Party cannot be reformed from Big Government supporting to Small Government supporting party. And so form a new political party that will split the vote on the right, and there by hand political power to the Democrats for years to come. Even one more Scozzafava, in the face of this level of anger, is more risk than I want to take.
The Republican Party needs to move decisively to throw the Big Government Republicans under the bus. This looks pretty lame to me, and isn’t going to gain them much street cred with the Tea Parties. It looks like they are going to make the Tea Parties work hard in the primaries, to get candidates that they can support. It looks like the Republican elites haven’t spent enough time in the wilderness; Chairman Steel seems exceptionally tone deaf.
