When I moved to PA, the local stores said that only active duty, retirees and totally disabled received it year around. Yesterday, I (a Vietnam vet) was at the VA and had the pleasure to talk to a vet that was in both WWII and Korea. He spoke first by asking me what unit I served with overseas. I told him the 1st Cav. He then related a story how he was with an Airborne unit and how they would "mix it up" with the 1st Cav guys while in Korea because the 1st Cav guys would wear jump boots. He also told me of some of the action they were in while fighting the North Koreans. Sadly, we parted when his name was called to see the Doctor. I watched a proud man, slowly walk through the door realizing that for a moment I shared a bit of history that will soon no longer be told in the first person.
