I came back from Bruges and Brussels where the towns have "Marktplatz" squares surrounded by fine buildings several hundred years old, and walked slap bang into depressionville. On the north side are sixties concrete blockhouse buildings straight out of Judge Dredd and on the south it looks like most of London did when my father - whose parents chose not to evacuate him - played on the remains of Hitler's "redevelopment scheme" picking up the strips of aluminium the bombers dropped to confuse the ADMITTEDLY primitive radar his father helped put in place.

And as I speak bulldozers are being fuelled with yet more diesel paid for by taxpayer's money to rip down what is there and build a fantasy glass palace to the great god "shopping"

And yet there is hope, if only we can knock some sense into people. Last week I went to see my bank manager to sort out the account for my new company (yes, some of us are able to make money even in the depths of the shite we are in) and you would be AMAZED at the elegance of the architecture of the building through which I was taken, an elegance from the Victorian and Edwardian era which no casual member of the public ever sees, because this is all behind a door the staff use to get to the office.

On the continent, such concealment of the architectural vision of our ancestors would bring riots in the streets.

Part Two

I know rather a lot about applying political pressure I have done it directly and indirectly and I have made Gordon Brown, Dawn Primarolo, Tony Blair, John Major, Norman Lamont and Michael Portillo look bloody fools on their own turf in the Palace of Westminster. EVERY POLITICIAN KNOWS that for every candidate that stands against them in a general election there are at least a thousand that vote for them, and for every one of those voters there are between ten and a hundred who would do the same if they did not fear doing so would let the candidate they hate the most win the day.

THEY KNOW that for every person who marches in the street waving a banner there are ten who agree with the marchers and would march with them "if only they could spare ....." and there are between twenty and fifty who will put their name to a petition demanding something be done.

It used to be said by political lobbyists that every INDIVIDUALLY CRAFTED, HAND WRITTEN letter sent to an MP professing outrage at such and such meant there were between fifty and a thousand like minded people in the constituency who had not the time, the skill or the interest to craft such a document and make their voice heard, but every one of those "unheard ones" should be expected to put a 'X' on a ballot paper next time. One of the crimes of New Labour was to give MP's an email address and a petition website, for now it is much easier.

I must say though, Britain First's boilerplate letter campaigns are a total waste of time, as are every other such campaign by every other pressure group. If you want to make yourself heard, adding you name to someone else's words is pointless. You **MUST** make a letter personal, it MUST give powerful examples of why YOU feel the way you do, or what impact a measure proposed will have, or in place has had, that you feel is unjust. The recently widowed woman forced by Waltham Forest Council to accept social housing in Walsall so as to make way for Olympic sized renters being a good one...

Well, Bristol, it would be easy to say "who knows" and leave it at that, giving the impression Gary's doing little more than pissing himself while wearing a dark suit, giving him a nice warm feeling but nobody notices.

And in some ways it might be a true suggestion. Who can possibly KNOW. Who can say WITH CERTAINTY that what they did, who they wrote to, who they complained about, who they marched up the street in support of, or in protest against, had any impact.

But I know this. When Terry Waite lay on the floor of a stinking hovel in a down-market arabic shit-hole courtesy of American ****wits who did not give a stuff for the lives of the British they destroyed through their agenda of interfering in world events, an unknown woman took a postcard with a picture of John Bunyan wrote a message telling Waite he most certainly was NOT forgotten, addressed it to Terry Waite C/O Hezbollah The Party Of God and bugger me the Royal Mail actually succeeded in getting it delivered.

Interviewed (by Parky, I think it was) after his release from this living hell Waite spoke of this card arriving and of the incredible feeling it gave to know that someone, somewhere out there in the world knew of his plight and cared enough to tell him they knew.

OVER SEVENTY years ago this jumped up Austrian decided that because he'd found a way to make the Germans understand the value of money again, it gave him the right to park his tanks on just about anyone's lawn he fancied. JUST OVER THIRTY years ago some jumped up scrap metal dealers thought it would be a wizard joke to raise a flag on a rock for the Generals who expected to be the ones returned in the next "General" Election.

There can be no NATIONAL outrage at anything today. How can there be. We have no Nation. Get Real.

We have been devolved into lumps to make us easier to conquer. Politicians are triplicated in London, the devolved Region, and Brussels. Each rant that the other two bind them so they can do nothing. Nice One, Minister as Sir Humphrey would say.

But all is not lost. I have seen the fire in the belly of the people of this country. It is still there, it burns as bright today as it did. It has never extinguished. I saw it first hand in circumstances I sincerely hope no one reading this ever needs to, and yet I fear many of you will.

Fifteen months ago a thug smashed out of his mind on coke raped and then stabbed to death a heavily pregnant 19 year old. Having gone out of his way to ensure he had also killed the child she carried, he set fire to her bed and made his escape hoping the flames would consume the evidence, including the testimony of my daughter who lived with her daughter of five months in the flat below the one where this bestial deed was done. And this thug was white as the driven snow that coursed through his veins courtesy of his self-admitted £300 a day habit.

When my daughter had to flee her smoke-filled home with little more than the clothes she stood in, people in the same estate on benefits with kids of their own dug into cupboards and toy boxes. Pensioners knocked her door offering plates of dinner, casseroles and apple pies. A guy in SWINDON emailed me offering to come and rake through the garden to get all the bits of glass up.

People mocked Boris' "Brushes and Broom's" Brigade that took to the streets after the London Riots.

I did not.

Like "Leveller" below I FIRMLY believe the outrage is not public because the people are nowhere near breaking point. Unlike many below the age of my long dead grandparents, I have also seen the fire that lights when people react to what they see as something truly outrageous. It is a thing most wonderful to behold, but terrible too.
