I agree, Amanda. I should be clear: I'm not talking about giving up on things like matching gifts or volunteer grants. Those are employee driven, which is exactly what nonprofits should focus on. I'm really talking about corporate grants.

Alison, what are you trying to get me whacked?! I'll be sleeping with the fishes if Phil gets wind of this. :)

Hey Jeff, thanks for stopping by. Nonprofits need to focus on getting company partnerships. I was at a conference recently and a nonprofit exec asked if there were any "great, new ideas for fundraising with businesses." Ideas are great but start by focusing on getting partnerships then you can pursue any idea you want with vigor. Of course, someone will say, "Yeah, but isn't what companies want, new ideas?" No, not really. What they want is a magnetic nonprofit brand. You can read about that in the link I referenced above.

Thanks for your comment! Maybe companies should say "All proceeds - every fricken dime you give us we give back to the charity. We keep nothing." :)

I get it. And this is how another "authority" describe "All proceeds": "All proceeds means ALL monies. Everything goes to the charity. If you want your money back for costs, promote it 'All proceeds (minus expenses)."

Who's right, ehow?

Curious: so if someone is donating 100% of the proceeds to charity, and the donation includes their costs, how do you articulate that to consumers? All proceeds plus expenses"?

I don't think anyone is saying that Yankee or Chesney won't donate the money, or are skimming off the top. But it is ugly how they are disclosing - or not disclosing - how much they plan to give. "All proceeds" means the total - if the tee is selling for $15 then $15 goes to the cause. There's no right or wrong here though. That's part of the challenge. We all have a different interpretation of what these words mean. Take a look at my Pinterest board you'll see it's all over the place. Let me know when you get the final numbers in from Chesney!

Thanks for commenting, Simonstar. I like this donation box from Merry Maids. They gave it to clients in their homes so they could fill it full of coins in February. The Maids pick it up at the end of the month and it goes to AHA.

I agree, but it's a tough business model so many will fail and succeed. Did you see my post on 50back.com?
